The Edmonton Elks new owner has been revealed and according to TSN reporter Dave Naylor, longtime season ticket holder and former owner of Thompson Brothers Construction Larry Thompson will be the new owner.
The Elks have been a community-owned team for 75 years and now that era is over. With the new ownership, the CFL now only has two community-owned teams left in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In addition, Naylor said an announcement is expected before the end of the week.
This season, the Edmonton Elks are 2-7 sitting in last place of the West Division. They have won their last two games since Tre Ford took over the starting job. The team fired head coach and general manager Chris Jones after an 0-5 start to the season.
During his second tenure in Edmonton, Jones went 8-33 from 2021-23. The Elks went on a 22-game home losing streak which came to an end on August 17, 2023, defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-10 in which Tre Ford started that game. The Elks finished the season 4-14 in 2023.
They have not made the playoffs since 2019 when they finished the season 8-10 and lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Divisional Finals 36-16.
