Houston Roughnecks sign three players including WR Carlos Carriere

The Houston Roughnecks signed wide receiver Carlos Carriere, linebacker J.T. Tyler, and defensive back Markel Roby on Wednesday according to the UFL Transactions page.

Carlos Carriere is six foot five and weighs 200 pounds. The 24-year-old from Alpharetta, Georgia, attended the New York Giants rookie minicamp in 2023. Carriere signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 21, 2023. He was on the Ticats practice squad before the Ticats released him on August 1, 2023.

Carriere was drafted by the San Antonio Brahmas in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft. He went unclaimed in the 2024 UFL Super Draft and became a free agent.

Collegiately, Carriere played four seasons at the University of Maryland (2018-21) with 38 catches for 480 yards, and six touchdowns in 31 games for the Terrapins. Then, he transferred to Central Michigan in 2022 with 45 catches for 520 yards, and two touchdowns in 11 games for the Chippewas.

J.T. Tyler is six foot one and weighs 238 pounds. The 26-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, signed with the Houston Gamblers on March 29, 2023. He made 51 tackles (33 solo, 18 assists), 5 tackles for loss, one interception for 11 yards, and six pass breakups in 10 games.

The Gamblers were rebranded to the Roughriders as part of the USFL and XFL merger forming the United Football League. In 2024, Tyler made 50 tackles (23 solo, 27 assists), one tackle for loss, and two pass breakups in 10 games.

Collegiately, Tyler played six seasons at Princeton University (2016-21) making 163 tackles (102 solo, 61 assists), 28.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four interceptions for 40 yards, 16 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, one kick return for 20 yards, and one punt return for 25 yards in 40 games for the Tigers. He was named Second Team All-Ivy League in 2018, First Team All-Ivy League in 2021, Second Team FCS All-American by STATS, and Defensive Player of the Year in 2021.

Markel Roby is six foot and weighs 190 pounds. The 24-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana, worked out for NFL Scouts on December 12, 2022. Roby signed with the Houston Gamblers on December 26, 2023, before the Gamblers were rebranded as the Roughnecks. In 2024, Roby made 58 tackles (36 solo, 22 assists), one tackle for loss, one sack, three interceptions, 8 pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 10 games.

Collegiately, Roby played three seasons at Briar Cliff University (2017-19) with 162 tackles (99 solo, 63 assists), six tackles for loss, six interceptions, two touchdowns, and 11 pass breakups in 28 games for the Chargers. He was a two-time All-GPAC Honorable Mention.
