The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed offensive lineman Trevon Tate and released quarterback Eric Barriere on Monday.
Trevon Tate is six foot four and weighs 295 pounds. The 28-year-old from Houston, Texas, signed with the Calgary Stampeders on February 8, 2024. He played four games for the Stampeders in 2024. The Stampeders released him on August 13, 2024.
Tate signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Then, Tate signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and made his CFL Debut against Toronto on November 2, 2019.
Tate played two games before Hamilton released him and he signed with Toronto in 2021. Later, the Ottawa Redblacks signed Tate off the Argonauts’ practice squad and played one game. He returned to Toronto and played four games for Toronto. In 2022, Tate played four games before suffering a season-ending elbow injury.
Tate started ten games for the Argonauts in 2023. In 2023, Toronto’s offense ranked second in offensive average points (29.3), second in offensive touchdowns (56), second in average net offense (377.8), fourth in average rushing yards (113.7), fourth in average passing yards (272.2), and first the least number of sacks allowed (19).
Collegiately, Tate played four seasons at Memphis (2015-18) playing 39 games, of which 34 were starts at left tackle and right tackle for the Tigers.
In his last three seasons in Memphis, the Tigers’ offense combined for 19,275 yards of total offense (6,425 yards per season), scored 188 TD, and combined to score on 82.1 percent (156-of-190) of its trips inside the red zone. He was named First Team All-AAC in 2017.
Eric Barriere is six foot one and weighs 210 pounds. The 26-year-old from Inglewood, California, attended the Denver Broncos rookie minicamp in 2022 but was not offered a contract.
Next, Barriere signed with the Michigan Panthers on May 20, 2022. He played two games completing 14 of 24 passes (58.3%) for 118 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and two carries for 13 yards.
In 2023, Barriere spent time on the Michigan Panthers and New Jersey Generals practice squads. The Generals claimed him off waivers on May 30, 2023. Then, Barriere signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on January 18, 2024.
Barriere played one preseason game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2024 completing 3 of 7 passes (43%) for 23 yards, and two interceptions. The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Barriere on June 30, 2024, and was placed on the practice squad.
Collegiately, Barriere played five seasons at Eastern Washington (2017-21) completing 1,007 of 1,623 passes (62%) for 13,809 yards, 121 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, 376 carries for 1,585 yards, 22 touchdowns, and three catches for 16 yards in 51 games for the Eagles.
He was a two-time Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year, two-time First Team All-Big Sky, two-time Third Team All-Big Sky, and a 2021 Walter Payton Award Winner.
