The Hamilton Tiger-Cats placed quarterback Taylor Powell (Head) and wide receiver Luther Hakunavanhu (Head) on the six-game injured list on Tuesday according to the CFL Transactions page.
Taylor Powell is six foot two and weighs 207 pounds. The 25-year-old from Fayetteville, Arkansas, completed 38 of 48 passes (79.2%) for 390 yards, two touchdowns, and 7 carries for 70 yards in four games this season. He was knocked out of the game late in the first quarter against the Edmonton Elks last Saturday.
Powell attended the Carolina Panthers rookie minicamp in 2023 before signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on May 17, 2023. In 2023, Powell completed 197 of 292 passes (67.5%) for 2,283 yards, 10 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 28 carries for 196 yards, and one touchdown in 16 games for the Ticats.
Collegiately, Powell played three seasons at Missouri (2017-19) completing 35 of 76 passes (46%) for 431 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and seven carries for one yard in 15 games for the Tigers. He was named a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2018 and 2019.
Next, Powell transferred to Troy in 2021 completing 125 of 189 passes (66%) for 1,251 yards, 7 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 19 carries for -95 yards, and one touchdown in six games for the Trojans. Then, Powell transferred to Eastern Michigan in 2022 completing 174 of 269 passes (65%) for 2,111 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 44 carries for -98 yards, and two touchdowns in nine games for the Eagles.
Luther Hakunavanhu is six foot four and weighs 209 pounds. The 27-year-old from Gweru, Zimbabwe, made 9 catches for 171 yards, and four touchdowns in 8 games this year. He suffered a head injury in last Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Elks.
The Calgary Stampeders drafted Hakunavanhu in the fifth round (44th pick) of the 2021 CFL Draft. In three seasons, Hakunavanhu has made 57 catches for 842 yards, eight touchdowns, and one carry for -5 yards in 35 games. In 2023, he made 23 catches for 311 yards, three touchdowns, and one carry for -5 yards in 16 games.
Collegiately, Hakunavanhu played three seasons at York University (2017-19) making 68 catches for 938 yards, five touchdowns, and 17 tackles (14 solo, 3 assists) in 21 games for the Lions.
