The NTT IndyCar Series concluded the Labor Day weekend on Sunday afternoon for race two of the Milwaukee Mile 250. Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden started the race on the pole and his teammate Scott McLaughlin started in second place.

There was drama before the race started. Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou’s car suffered mechanical issues at the exit of pit road. Palou went multiple laps down. As the cars were taking off to start the race on lap 6, the officials waived the start off but Linus Lundqvist ran into his teammate Marcus Armstrong, who then took out Josef Newgarden. Lundqvist was given a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact.

The race would officially get underway on lap 16 with Scott McLaughlin leading. He led up to lap 43 when Will Power passed him on lap 44. Will Power led 11 laps before the first round of pit stops started. He went in on lap 55 and Santino Ferrucci was the new leader.

Once the pit stop cycles were completed, Will Power resumed the lead on lap 59. On lap 66, David Malukas suffered a mechanical issue on the front stretch leading to the second caution. Will Power continued to lead until lap 97 for his second pit stop and Santino Ferrucci took the lead. Once the second round of pit stop cycles was complete, Will Power took the lead on lap 101.

Twelve laps later, Sting Ray Robb spun around at Turn 2 bringing out the third caution of the afternoon. Will Power went to pit road and Alexander Rossi was the new leader. On lap 125, Christian Rasmussen made contact with Graham Rahal sending him to the wall at Turn 3 for the fourth caution.

Not long after that, Will Power spun around at Turn 4 just as the race was going green. Rossi led until lap 162 when he made his third pit stop of the day and Scott McLaughlin was the new leader.

McLaughlin was in a fight with Colton Herta for the lead. Herta took the lead on lap 164 and the two went back-and-fourth for the lead. At one point, McLaughlin had fresher tires than Herta and briefly had the lead but Herta made a hard charge from the outside of Turn 4 to regain the lead on lap 199. McLaughlin would regain the lead on lap 218. The final caution came out ten laps later when Sting Ray Robb made contact with the wall at Turn 2.

The race resumed on lap 239 and McLaughlin led the last 11 laps to win his third race of the season and the seventh of his career by .4558 seconds over Scott Dixon, who started 17th. It was Dixon’s 142nd career podium finish, which broke a tie with Mario Andretti for first on the all-time podium finishes list.

Colton Herta finished third, Santino Ferrucci finished fourth, and Marcus Ericsson finished fifth. There were 763 passes, of which 177 were for positions. Alex Palou finished in 19th place, while Will Power finished in 10th place. Palou has a 33-point lead in the championship standings with one race left of the season.
