The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (62-67) started their final 12-game road trip of the season on Tuesday night against the Buffalo Bisons (60-72) from Sahlen Field. Lehigh Valley starter Kyle Tyler (1-1, 3.60 ERA) was on the mound against Buffalo’s Jake Bloss (0-1, 6.35 ERA).
In the bottom of the first inning, Buffalo had a runner on first base with two outs when Josh Kasevich hit an RBI single to right field scoring Jonatan Clase for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Buffalo had runners on first and second base when Damiano Palmegiani hit Tyler’s cutter for a three-run home run over the wall at left-center field extending Buffalo’s lead 4-0. A ground out by Rafael Lantigua ended the inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, Buffalo designated hitter Alan Roden hit Tyler’s changeup for a solo home run clearing the wall at right field for a 5-0 lead. Buffalo did not add any more runs in the inning.
Moving to the bottom of the fourth inning, Buffalo had the bases loaded when designated hitter Alan Roden hit an RBI single to right field scoring Nick Raposo for a 6-0 lead. Alan Rangel replaced Kyle Tyler as the new Lehigh Valley pitcher. Then, Josh Kasevich cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field for a 9-0 lead.
Kasevich went to third base on a throwing error by David Dahl. A sacrifice fly by Will Robertson scored Kasevich for a 10-0 lead. Alan Rangel struck out Damiano Palmegiani and Rafael Lantigua to end the inning. Kyle Tyler (3.0 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 4 BB, 5 K) threw 80 pitches, of which 46 were strikes.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Alan Rangel put runners on second and third base with one out when he was replaced by Griff McGarry. Buffalo third baseman Damiano Palmegiani brought Josh Kasevich home for an 11-0 lead. Buffalo did not score any more runs in the inning. Alan Rangel (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) threw 47 pitches, of which 31 were strikes, and Griff McGarry (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) threw 19 pitches, of which 9 were strikes.
Tyler McKay was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the seventh inning. McKay (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K) threw 15 pitches, of which 11 were strikes. Freddy Tarnok was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With one out, Syracuse third baseman Damiano Palmegiani hit Tarnok’s slider for a solo home run over the wall at left field for a 12-0 lead. Buffalo did not score any more runs in the inning. Tarnok (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K) threw 22 pitches, of which 12 were strikes.
At the top of the ninth inning, Lehigh Valley right fielder David Dahl flies out to center fielder Steward Berroa, second baseman Jim Haley struck out swinging, and catcher Cody Roberts struck out swinging and the game was over.
The IronPigs were shut out by the Bisons 12-0. They finished the night with three hits and committed two errors. The loss went to Lehigh Valley pitcher Kyle Tyler for his fourth loss of the season, and the win went to Buffalo pitcher Paxton Schultz.
