Lehigh Valley comes up short in Buffalo

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (63-69) and the Buffalo Bisons (62-73) played game four from Sahlen Field on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh Valley starter Robinson Pena (1-2, 3.00 ERA) was on the mound against Buffalo’s James Kaprielian (1-4, 8.31 ERA).

At the top of the first inning, Lehigh Valley had the bases loaded with nobody out when second baseman Jim Haley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Marcus Lee Sang for a 1-0 lead. A ground out by designated hitter David Dahl ended the inning.

At the top of the third inning, Lehigh Valley runners were on the corners with one out when second baseman Jim Haley grounded into a forceout to shortstop Rafael Lantigua scoring Marcus Lee Sang for a 2-0 lead. It was Haley’s 36th RBI of the season. A flyout by designated hitter David Dahl ended the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Buffalo had the bases loaded when Alan Roden hit a two-run RBI single to center field scoring Michael Turconi and Steward Berroa and the game was tied 2-2. Then, Josh Kasevich hit an RBI single to center field scoring Jonatan Clase for a 3-2 lead. Buffalo did not add any more runs in the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Buffalo had a runner on second base with two outs when Steward Berroa hit Pena’s splitter for a two-run home run clearing the wall at center field for a 5-2 lead. Buffalo did not add any more runs in the inning.

At the top of the fifth inning, Lehigh Valley had runners on second and third base when second baseman Jim Haley brought Marcus Lee Sang home with a sacrifice fly to center field, and the IronPigs trailed the Bisons 5-3. It was Haley’s 37th RBI of the season. A strikeout by Lehigh Valley third baseman Trevor Schwecke ended the inning.

Lehigh Valley starter Robinson Pena (4.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 3 K) threw 88 pitches, of which 52 were strikes. Alan Rangel replaced Pena in the bottom of the fifth inning with runners on first and second base. Rangel got the three outs to end the inning throwing seven pitches, of which six were strikes. Alan Rangel (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K) threw 31 pitches, of which 25 were strikes.

At the top of the seventh inning, Lehigh Valley had a runner on second base with one out when first baseman Darick Hall hit an RBI single to right field scoring Scott Kingery and the IronPigs trailed the Bisons 5-4. It was Hall’s 65th RBI of the season. Lehigh Valley did not add any more runs in the inning.

Tyler Gilbert pitched for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gilbert (1.0 IP, 1 H) threw 16 pitches, of which 10 were strikes to get three outs. At the top of the ninth inning, Lehigh Valley shortstop Scott Kingery hit a double to right field with one out. Lehigh Valley first baseman Darick Hall popped out to second baseman Rafael Lantigua, and a flyout by second baseman Jim Haley ended the game.

The IronPigs lost to the Bisons 5-4. They finished the afternoon with 10 hits and committed one error. The loss went to Lehigh Valley start Robinson Pena for his third loss of the season. The win went to Buffalo starter James Kaprielian and Hagen Danner earned his sixth save of the season.
