The Calgary Stampeders (4-8-1) hosted the Montreal Alouettes (10-2-1) on Saturday night from McMahon Stadium to conclude Week 15. The Stampeders came into this game on a four-game losing streak and Montreal were looking to rebound after last week’s loss in B.C.
First Quarter:
Calgary got the ball to start the game on their 30-yard line. Quarterback Jake Maier completed two passes for 23 yards and running back Dedrick Mills rushed for a gain of four yards before the drive stalled. Montreal started its first drive of the game from their 19-yard line.
On the first play, Montreal running back Walter Fletcher rushed for a gain of 12 yards before Calgary defensive back Nick Statz knocked the ball out of Fletcher’s arm and it was recovered by Calgary defensive back Ben Labrosse on the Alouettes’ 31-yard line.
Calgary running back Dedrick Mills had two carries for 13 yards and quarterback Jake Maier completed a short pass to Clint Barnes moving the ball to the Alouettes’ 18-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Jake Maier threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Marken Michel for a 7-0 lead with 9:31 left of the first quarter capping off a four-play drive for 31 yards.
On the kickoff, Montreal returner James Letcher Jr. lost the ball after Micah Awe nailed him hard. The ball bounced toward the out-of-bounds line and Micah Teitz touched the ball before it went out of bounds and it was Calgary’s ball on the Alouettes’ 23-yard line.
Quarterback Jake Maier completed two passes for 16 yards but the drive stalled. Kicker Rene Parades made a 19-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead with 7:47 left of the first quarter. The Stampeders scored 10 points off turnovers.
For the next two series, both teams went two-and-out. Montreal had the ball on their 26-yard to start the next drive. The offense moved the ball up to the Stampeders’ 55-yard line before punting it back to Calgary with 22 seconds left. Calgary was unable to get the first down as the first quarter ended up 10-0.
Calgary had 78 yards on offense (57 yards passing, 21 yards rushing), five first downs, 1 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized one time for 10 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 6 of 8 passes for 57 yards, and one touchdown. Montreal had 47 yards on offense (23 yards passing, 24 yards rushing), two first downs, no red zone opportunities, and no penalties. Quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 5 of 6 passes for 23 yards.
Second Quarter:
In the second quarter, Calgary punter Cody Grace had his punt blocked by Sean Thomas-Erlington and he returned it for a touchdown. However, the command center reviewed it and in a questionable call penalized him for roughing the punter. Instead of a Montreal touchdown, the Stampeders kept the ball with a fresh set of downs on their 34-yard line. Calgary went two-and-out and Montreal got the ball on their 42-yard line with 13:17 left.
Montreal running back Walter Fletcher rushed for a gain of three yards and an illegal blocking penalty on Calgary moved the ball to their 52-yard line. On the next play, Montreal’s offensive line opened a hole for Walter Fletcher for a 55-yard run to reach the Stampeders’ three-yard line.
Quarterback Cody Fajardo finished the drive by faking a handoff before running into the end zone for a three-yard touchdown, and the Alouettes trailed the Stampeders 10-7 with 11:49 left to cap off a three-play drive for 68 yards.
Calgary’s offense went on a 12-play drive for 87 yards to the Alouettes 1-yard line and was in striking distance. However, backup quarterback Tommy Stevens bobbled the ball and Montreal defensive lineman Avery Ellis recovered it on their two-yard line with 4:13 left before halftime.
Montreal’s offense moved the ball to the Stampeders’ 44-yard line before James Vaughters sacked Cody Fajardo for a five-yard loss to end the drive. Calgary’s offense had the ball for the final 1:15 of the second quarter. They moved the ball to the Alouettes’ 54-yard line hoping to give Rene Paredes room to make a field goal with nine seconds left.
Unfortunately, that did not happen as quarterback Jake Maier was sacked by Wesley Sutton losing the ball in the process and Mustafa Johnson scooped it up for a 31-yard run just five yards shy of a touchdown when he was tackled by Peyton Logan. The Alouettes trailed the Stampeders 10-7 at halftime.
First Half Stats:
Calgary had 181 yards on offense (116 yards passing, 85 yards rushing, 20 yards lost), 16 first downs, 1 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 40 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 14 of 19 passes (74%) for 116 yards, and one touchdown. Running back Dedrick Mills had 12 carries for 80 yards and three catches for one yard.
Wide receiver Marken Michel made four catches for 53 yards, and one touchdown, while Cam Echols made three catches for 28 yards. Calgary’s defense made one sack, one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
Montreal had 164 yards on offense (82 yards passing, 87 yards rushing, 5 yards lost), 7 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 45 yards. Quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 8 of 9 passes (88%) for 82 yards, one carry for three yards, and one touchdown. Running back Walter Fletcher had four carries for 79 yards and one catch for three yards.
Wide receiver Charleston Rambo made two catches for 51 yards, and Tyler Snead made two catches for 19 yards. Montreal’s defense made one sack, two tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Third Quarter:
Montreal got the ball to start the third quarter on their 20-yard line. Montreal gained 26 yards before the drive stalled. Montreal punter Joseph Zema punted the ball 49 yards to Peyton Logan, who returned it for 15 yards to reach their 30-yard line with 11:53 left.
Calgary’s offense went on a 12-play drive for 71 yards chewing up over eight minutes off the clock before kicker Rene Paredes made a 16-yard field goal for a 13-7 lead with 3:10 left of the third quarter.
On Montreal’s next drive, quarterback Cody Fajardo threw two passes for 36 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 34-yard line. On second down, Calgary blitzed Fajardo and Justin Sambu sacked him for a 7-yard loss. Kicker Jose Carlos Maltos made a 53-yard field goal and the Alouettes trailed the Stampeders 13-10 with seven seconds left of the third quarter.
On the final play of the third quarter, Calgary quarterback Jake Maier completed a short pass to Reggie Begelton for nine yards to reach their 49-yard lineup 13-10.
Fourth Quarter:
In the fourth quarter, Calgary’s offense gained an additional 17 yards but they were short of a first down on the Alouettes’ 44-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes attempted a 51-yard field goal but he missed it off the left upright.
In the next three series, Montreal went two-and-out twice and Calgary went two-and-out once. Calgary’s offense had the ball on their 44-yard line to start the next drive. Quarterback Jake Maier completed two passes for 24 yards to reach the Alouettes’ 42-yard line.
The Stampeders continued to march down the field reaching Alouettes’ 26-yard line but a face mask penalty and an unnecessary roughness penalty backed them up 30 yards to the Alouettes’ 55-yard line. Quarterback Jake Maier threw a 10-yard pass to Peyton Logan setting up kicker Rene Paredes to attempt a 52-yard field goal. He missed it wide right and Montreal returner James Letcher Jr. returned it for 25 yards to reach their 19-yard line with 1:24 left of the game.
Montreal quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 5 of 6 passes for 56 yards, and running back Walter Fletcher rushed for a gain of one yard getting down the ground with one second left. Kicker Jose Carlos Maltos made a 42-yard field goal and the game was tied 13-13 heading to overtime.
Overtime:
Montreal got the ball to start overtime on the 35-yard line. Quarterback Cody Fajardo threw two passes for 12 yards before kicker Jose Carlos Maltos made a 30-yard field goal for a 16-13 lead. It was Calgary’s turn on the 35-yard line. Quarterback Jake Maier threw two incomplete passes and kicker Rene Paredes made a 42-yard field goal and the game was tied 16-16.
Calgary got the ball to start the second overtime. Quarterback Jake Maier completed one pass for five yards and kicker Rene Paredes made a 42-yard field goal for a 19-16 lead. Montreal had a chance to win the game with a touchdown. Running back Walter Fletcher and quarterback Cody Fajardo combined with two carries logging six yards. Montreal kicker Jose Carlos Maltos made a 37-yard field goal and the game ended in a 19-19 tie. It is the second tie this season. The first tie happened in Week 10 when the Ottawa Redblacks and Saskatchewan Roughriders finished in a 22-22 tie.
Final Stats:
Calgary had 351 yards on offense (236 yards passing, 135 yards rushing, 20 yards lost), 26 first downs, 1 for 4 in the red zone, and the team was penalized 10 times for 110 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 29 of 37 passes (78.4%) for 236 yards, and one touchdown. Running back Dedrick Mills had 21 carries for 122 yards and four catches for two yards.
Wide receiver Marken Michel made six catches for 73 yards, and one touchdown, and Reggie Begelton made seven catches for 68 yards. Kicker Rene Paredes made 4 of 6 field goals with a long of 42 yards. Calgary’s defense made 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and three tackles on special teams.
Montreal had 292 yards on offense (204 yards passing, 115 yards rushing, 27 yards lost), 16 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized 8 times for 91 yards. Quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 19 of 26 passes (73%) for 204 yards, five carries for 20 yards, and one touchdown. Running back Walter Fletcher had seven carries for 90 yards and three catches for 15 yards.
Wide receiver Kaion Julien-Grant made eight catches for 71 yards, and Charleston Rambo made two catches for 51 yards. Kicker Jose Carlos Maltos made 4 of 4 field goals with a long 53 yards. Montreal’s defense made 57 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and six tackles on special teams.
