Saskatchewan ends a two-month-long losing streak in Calgary

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (6-7-1) visited McMahon Stadium on Friday night against the Calgary Stampeders (4-9-1) in their first meeting of the season.

Saskatchewan came into this game not having won in two months after starting the season winning 5 of 6 games. They have since gone 0-6-1. On the other side, the Stampeders have gone 0-4-1 with their last win coming in Week 9 against Toronto on August 4, 2024. Saskatchewan signed running back Ryquell Armstead last week and he made an impact in this game.

First Quarter:

Calgary got the ball to start the game on their 32-yard line. Calgary running back Dedrick Mills had two carries for four yards to reach their 41-yard line facing second down. On the next play, Calgary backup quarterback Tommy Stevens got a good block from Reggie Begelton on his right side to score a 68-yard touchdown. Kicker Rene Paredes missed the extra point for a 6-0 lead capping off a three-play drive for 78 yards.

On Saskatchewan’s first possession of the game, running back Ryquell Armstead and quarterback Trevor Harris led the offense down to the one-yard line. Then, backup quarterback Shea Patterson scored a one-yard touchdown for a 7-6 lead with 8:16 left capping off an eight-play drive for 63 yards.

Calgary went two-and-out on their next drive and Saskatchewan took over on their 50-yard line. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed a 27-yard pass to Dhel Duncan-Busby to reach the Stampeders’ 33-yard line. Running back Ryquell Armstead rushed for a gain of six yards and quarterback Trevor Harris rushed for a gain of two yards before kicker Brett Lauther made a 33-yard field goal for a 10-6 lead with 4:45 left of the first quarter.

On the next Calgary series, quarterback Jake Maier threw four passes for 38 yards, and running back Dedrick Mills had one carry for three yards to reach the Roughriders’ 34-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 41-yard field goal and the Stampeders trailed the Roughriders 10-9 with 33 seconds left of the first quarter.

On the last play, Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris threw a 7-yard pass to Dhel Duncan-Busby to reach their 54-yard line, and the Roughriders led 10-9 heading into the second quarter.

Saskatchewan had 106 yards on offense (79 yards passing, 27 yards rushing), five first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was one penalty for five yards. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed 6 of 6 passes for 79 yards, and one carry for 2 yards.

Calgary had 114 yards on offense (38 yards passing, 76 yards rushing), three first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized one time for 5 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 4 of 7 passes for 38 yards.

Second Quarter:

In the second quarter, both defenses made quick work as the offenses went two-and-out a combined six times with 6:11 to go before halftime. Saskatchewan’s offense started to roll again from their 11-yard line. They went on a seven-play drive for 90 yards before backup quarterback Shea Patterson finished the drive off with a two-yard touchdown for a 17-9 lead with 2:02 left before halftime.

Calgary quarterback Jake Maier threw three passes for 18 yards getting one first down before punting the ball back to Saskatchewan with 1:12 left. Saskatchewan running back Ryquell Armstead started the drive with a 13-yard run to reach their 31-yard line. Next, quarterback Trevor Harris completed three straight passes for 59 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 20-yard line.

Then, Harris rushed for a gain of 14 yards to the Stampeders’ 6-yard line, and Ryquell Armstead got them closer to the end zone with a five-yard run. Quarterback Trevor Harris finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown for a 24-9 lead as time expired to end the second quarter capping off a seven-play drive for 92 yards in 71 seconds.

First Half Stats:

Saskatchewan had 326 yards on offense (200 yards passing, 126 yards rushing), 16 first downs, 3 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 40 yards. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed 12 of 13 passes (92.3%) for 200 yards, three carries for 17 yards, and one touchdown. Running back Ryquell Armstead had 13 carries for 104 yards.

Wide receiver KeeSean Johnson made five catches for 86 yards, and Kian Schaffer-Baker made three catches for 48 yards. Saskatchewan’s defense made one sack.

Calgary had 137 yards on offense (75 yards passing, 70 yards rushing, 8 yards lost), four first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team had no penalties. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 10 of 13 passes (77%) for 75 yards, and one carry for -9 yards.

Running back Dedrick Mills had three carries for 10 yards and one catch for 9 yards. Wide receiver Jalen Philpot made four catches for 32 yards, and Marken Michel made two catches for 18 yards.

Third Quarter:

Calgary got the ball to start the third quarter on their 34-yard line. Running back Peyton Logan started the drive with a 15-yard run to reach their 49-yard line. Quarterback Jake Maier completed three passes for 37 yards, and Dedrick Mills had one carry for 11 yards getting Calgary to the Roughriders’ 13-yard line.

On the next play, Jake Maier was initially sacked by Miles Brown but an offsides penalty on Saskatchewan put the ball on the Roughriders’ 8-yard line. Then, Jake Maier threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Clark Barnes and the Stampeders trailed the Roughriders 24-16 with 10:29 left capping off an eight-play drive for 76 yards.

Saskatchewan running back Ryquell Armstead started the next drive with two carries for 17 yards to reach their 50-yard line. Next, quarterback Trevor Harris threw a 7-yard pass to Kian Schaffer-Baker to reach the Stampeders’ 53-yard line. Then, running backs Ryquell Armstead and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon combined with three carries logging 26 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 27-yard line.

Saskatchewan running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon got another carry for two yards before quarterback Trevor Harris thew a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kian Schaffer-Baker for a 31-16 lead with 4:44 left of the third quarter capping off an eight-play drive for 77 yards in five minutes.

Calgary’s offense had the ball for the final 4:25 of the third quarter. They moved the ball to the Roughriders’ 8-yard line as the third quarter came to an end down 31-16.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Calgary quarterback Jake Maier threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Philpot and the Stampeders trailed the Roughriders 31-23 with 13:40 left of the game to cap off a 10-play drive for 92 yards in six minutes.

Saskatchewan’s offense had the ball on their 48-yard line. Running back Ryquell Armstead rushed for a gain of 39 yards before running out of bounds to reach the Stampeders’ 23-yard line. Next, running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon rushed for a gain of three yards before the drive stalled. Kicker Brett Lauther made a 32-yard field goal for a 34-23 lead with 11:16 left of the game.

Calgary quarterback Jake Maier started the next drive throwing two passes for 21 yards moving the ball to the Roughriders’ 49-yard line. Calgary’s offense moved the ball to the Roughriders’ two-yard line. Running back Dedrick Mills finished the drive by scoring a two-yard touchdown. They attempted a two-point conversion but did not get it and trailed the Roughriders 34-29 with 5:57 left of the game capping off a seven-play drive for 29 yards.

Saskatchewan running back Ryquell Armstead started the next drive with two carries for six yards forcing third down. During the punt, Saskatchewan punter Adam Korsak was hit by Adam Auclair, and the Roughriders were given an automatic first down on their 49-yard line. Saskatchewan moved the ball up to the Stampeders’ 32-yard line before kicker Brett Lauther made a 40-yard field goal for a 37-29 lead with 1:42 left of the game.

Saskatchewan’s defense put the game away when Jameer Thurman intercepted Jake Maier’s pass with 1:15 left. The Roughriders ran out the rest of the clock to beat the Stampeders 37-29 to end a seven-game losing streak.

Final Stats:

Saskatchewan had 485 yards on offense (248 yards passing, 244 yards rushing, 7 yards lost), 26 first downs, 3 for 4 in the red zone, and the team was penalized seven times for 51 yards. Quarterback Trevor Harris completed 16 of 18 passes (88%) for 248 yards, one touchdown, three carries for 17 yards, and one touchdown. Running back Ryquell Armstead had a good debut with 25 carries for 207 yards.

Wide receiver KeeSean Johnson made six catches for 90 yards, and Kian Schaffer-Baker made five catches for 80 yards and one touchdown. Kicker Brett Lauther made 3 of 3 field goals with a long of 40 yards. Saskatchewan’s defense made 37 tackles, one tackle for loss, two sacks, one interception, and 10 tackles on special teams.

Calgary had 362 yards (197 yards passing, 194 yards rushing, 29 yards lost), 20 first downs, 3 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 40 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 25 of 31 passes (81%) for 197 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and one carry for 7 yards. Running back Dedrick Mills had 10 carries for 74 yards, one touchdown, and one catch for 9 yards.

Wide receiver Marken Michel made six catches for 48 yards, and Jalen Philpot made six catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. Kicker Rene Paredes made one field goal for 41 yards. Calgary’s defense made 48 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and eight tackles on special teams.
