D.C. Defenders sign six players including running back Darius Hagans

The D.C. Defenders signed running back Darius Hagans, offensive linemen David Satkowski and Michael Maietti, defensive tackle Joe Wallace, and defensive backs Adam Sparks and Deontay Anderson on Tuesday according to the UFL Transactions page.

Darius Hagans is six foot and weighs 207 pounds. The 26-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia, signed with the D.C. Defenders on January 22, 2024. In 2024, Hagans had 48 carries for 173 yards, one touchdown, six catches for 32 yards, and one kick return for 21 yards in eight games.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Hagans as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2023. The Colts released him on June 1, 2023. Next, Hagans signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on June 5, 2023. In 2023, Hagans had 12 carries for 30 yards, and two catches for -4 yards in three games. The Steelers released him on August 28, 2023.

Collegiately, Hagans played one season at Alderson-Broaddus in 2017 with 64 carries for 376 yards, four touchdowns, five kick returns for 62 yards, one punt return for three yards, and six tackles (6 solo) in 10 games for the Battlers.

Then, Hagans transferred to Virginia State (2019, 2021-22) with 420 carries for 2,069 yards, 17 touchdowns, 31 catches for 428 yards, five touchdowns, four kick returns for 25 yards, and 13 tackles (9 solo, 4 assists) in 29 games for the Trojans.

David Satkowski is six foot four and weighs 290 pounds. The 23-year-old from Southbury, Connecticut, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft and attended the Chicago Bears rookie minicamp.

The D.C. Defenders signed Satkowski on May 23, 2024. D.C.’s offense ranked fifth in total yards (2,274), rushing yards (850), yards per game (272.4), fourth in passing yards (1,874), and tied fifth in touchdowns (24).

Collegiately, Satkowski played four seasons at Stonehill College (2019, 2021-23) playing 31 games on the offensive line for the Skyhawks. In 2023, Stonehill averaged 22.9 points per game, 322.8 yards per game, 155.9 passing yards per game, 166.9 rushing yards per game, and 28 touchdowns finishing 5-5 on the season. Satkowski was named First Team All-NEC in 2023.

Michael Maietti is six foot one and weighs 290 pounds. The 27-year-old from West Orange, New Jersey, started 10 games for the Defenders in 2024. D.C.’s offense ranked fifth in total yards (2,274), rushing yards (850), yards per game (272.4), fourth in passing yards (1,874), and tied fifth in touchdowns (24).

The D.C. Defenders drafted Maietti in the sixth round (41st pick) in Phase 4 of the 2023 XFL Draft. He started five games for the Defenders in 2023 helping them to appear in the XFL Championship Game against the Arlington Renegades.

Collegiately, Maietti played three seasons at Rutgers (2017-19) playing center in 33 games for the Scarlet Knights. He was named to the Big Ten Network All-Freshman Team in 2017, and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten. In 2019, Rutgers’s offense had 554 total yards and only one sack allowed in the season-opening win over Massachusetts.

Then, Maietti transferred to Missouri (2020-21) playing center in 23 games for the Tigers. In 2021, Missouri’s offense averaged 29.08 points per game, 233.54 passing yards per game, 180.2 rushing yards per game, 44 touchdowns, and allowed 29 sacks finishing the season 6-7 on this way to appearing in the Armed Forces Bowl against the Army Black Knights.

Joe Wallace is six foot one and weighs 300 pounds. The 26-year-old from Dallas, Texas, made seven tackles (4 solo, 3 assists), and two tackles for loss in four games before he was placed on injured reserve and missed the rest of the 2024 season.

The D.C. Defenders drafted Wallace in the eighth round (60th pick) in Phase 3 of the 2022 XFL Draft. In 2023, Wallace made 21 tackles (9 solo, 12 assists), six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one sack, two pass breakups, and two quarterback hits in 10 games.

Collegiately, Wallace played three seasons at Texas Tech (2016-18) with 47 tackles (30 solo, 17 assists), seven tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 20 games for the Red Raiders.

Then, Wallace transferred to Sam Houston State (2019-21) with 77 tackles (47 solo, 30 assists), 24.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one pass breakup, four forced fumbles, and one blocked kick in 34 games for the Bearkats. He was named First Team All-Southland Conference in 2021.

Adam Sparks is six foot and weighs 170 pounds. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sparks was drafted by the D.C. Defenders in the 2024 UFL Dispersal Draft. The Defenders released him on March 10, 2024.

The Vegas Vipers (XFL) drafted Sparks in the 10th round (73rd pick) in Phase 2 of the 2023 XFL Draft. In 2023, Sparks made 31 tackles (21 solo, 10 assists), three tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and one interception for seven yards in seven games.

Collegiately, Sparks played four seasons at Missouri (2017-20) making 99 tackles (74 solo, 25 assists), six tackles for loss, three interceptions for seven yards, 12 pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 37 games for the Tigers.

Then, Sparks transferred to the University of Louisiana-Monroe in 2021 making 47 tackles (28 solo, 19 assists), three pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in nine games for the Warhawks.

Deontay Anderson is six foot and weighs 218 pounds. The 26-year-old from Houston, Texas, was drafted by the D.C. Defenders in the 2024 UFL Dispersal Draft. In 2024, Anderson made 21 tackles (14 solo, 7 assists), one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass breakup in nine games.

The Vegas Vipers (XFL) drafted Anderson in the ninth round (72nd pick) in Phase 2 of the 2023 XFL Draft. In 2023, Anderson made 52 tackles (31 solo, 21 assists), three tackles for loss, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception for 22 yards in 10 games.

Collegiately, Anderson played one season at Ole Miss in 2017 making 32 tackles (18 solo, 14 assists), 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception for eight yards, and one pass breakup in 12 games for the Rebels.

Then, Anderson transferred to Houston (2018-21) making 209 tackles (124 solo, 85 assists), 10.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception for eight yards, 20 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 44 games for the Cougars.
