Edmonton completes regular season sweep in Calgary

The Edmonton Elks (6-11) visited the Calgary Stampeders (4-11-1) on Saturday afternoon from McMahon Stadium for the third and final meeting of the regular season. Edmonton won both games by 14 points or more. Both teams were eliminated from playoff contention last week and the players on both teams were now auditioning for roster spots in 2025.

First Quarter:

Calgary got the ball to start the game from their 37-yard line. Dedrick Mills started the drive by running for 10 yards to reach their 47-yard line. Then, quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed a two-yard pass to Reggie Begelton before the drive stalled.

Edmonton started their first possession from their five-yard line. On the first play, Calgary’s defense blitzed Edmonton quarterback Tre Ford, who was looking for an open receiver. Calgary linebacker Bailey Devine-Scott was untouched chasing after Ford before sacking him in the end zone for a safety giving the Stampeders a 2-0 lead with 12:41 left of the first quarter.

Calgary started its next possession on their 42-yard line. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz threw a 54-yard pass to Reggie Begelton to reach the Elks’ 14-yard line. That was all they got on that drive before kicker Rene Paredes kicked a 21-yard field goal for a 5-0 lead with 10:25 left.

In the next three series, both defenses limited offensive opportunities with Calgary gaining three yards and Edmonton had 25 yards in two possessions with all three resulting in punts. Calgary got the ball back with 2:58 left of the first quarter from their 22-yard line.

On second down, quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed an 11-yard pass to Marken Michel to reach their 33-yard line. Running backs Peyton Logan and Kylin Hill combined with three carries logging 16 yards, and an offsides penalty on Edmonton defensive lineman A.C. Leonard placed the ball on their 54-yard line. On the last play, Edmonton linebacker Derrick Moncrief sacked Matthew Shiltz for a six-yard loss to force third down. The Stampeders led the Elks 5-0.

Calgary had 90 yards on offense (66 yards passing, 30 yards rushing, 6 yards lost), four first downs, 0 for 1 in the red zone, and the team did not get any penalties. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 4 of 9 passes for 90 yards.

Edmonton had 25 yards on offense (34 yards passing, 11 yards rushing, 15 yards lost), two first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized two times for 10 yards.

Second Quarter:

Edmonton started the second quarter from their 27-yard line. Edmonton quarterback Tre Ford began the drive by throwing three passes for 35 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 48-yard line. After running back Javon Leake gained four yards, quarterback Tre Ford threw two more passes for 15 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 29-yard line.

On the next play, Tre Ford could not find anyone open and took off for a gain of 14 yards getting them to the Stampeders’ 15-yard line. Then, Ford pitched the ball to wide receiver Eugene Lewis, who followed his blockers in front of him on his way to scoring a 15-yard touchdown. Edmonton led Calgary 7-5 with 9:27 left before halftime capping off an eight-play drive for 83 yards.

On the kickoff, Edmonton kicker Boris Bede kicked the ball 100 yards into the end zone and out of bounds for a single point. It was now 8-5 Edmonton.

Calgary quarterback Matthew Shiltz started the next drive by throwing a 12-yard pass to Clint Barnes, and Dedrick Mills rushed for a gain of three yards but that was all Calgary would get and they punted the ball back to Edmonton with 7:53 left before halftime.

Edmonton started their next drive from their 30-yard line. Quarterbacks Tre Ford and Dakota Prukop, along with running backs Justin Rankin and Javon Leake combined with four carries logging 23 yards to reach their 53-yard line.

Next, quarterback Tre Ford completed two passes for 30 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 32-yard line with 2:50 left. Running back Justin Rankin rushed for 17 yards, and Tre Ford threw a 14-yard pass to Dillon Mitchell to reach the Stampeders’ 1-yard line. Then, backup quarterback Dakota Prukop scored a one-yard touchdown with a quarterback sneak extending Edmonton’s lead 15-5 with 2:22 left before halftime to cap off a 10-play drive for 80 yards.

For the second time in this game, Edmonton kicker Boris Bede kicked the ball 97 yards into the end zone and out of bounds for another single point. It was now 16-5 Edmonton.

For the rest of the second quarter, Calgary had 29 yards on two possessions and Edmonton had nine yards on one possession to close out the first half. Edmonton led Calgary 16-5 at halftime.

First Half Stats:

Edmonton had 202 yards on offense (136 yards passing, 86 yards rushing, 15 yards lost), 13 first downs, 2 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized three times for 25 yards.

Quarterback Tre Ford completed 13 of 13 passes (100%) for 136 yards, and three carries for 33 yards. Running back Justin Rankin had two carries for 26 yards, and Javon Leake had four carries for 11 yards.

Wide receiver Tevin Jones made four catches for 52 yards, and Dillon Mitchell made three catches for 30 yards. Edmonton’s defense made two sacks and one tackle for loss.

Calgary had 144 yards on offense (104 yards passing, 52 yards rushing, 12 yards lost), 7 first downs, 0 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized five times for 59 yards. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 7 of 14 passes (50%) for 104 yards, and one carry for 13 yards. Running back Dedrick Mills had four carries for 23 yards.

Wide receiver Reggie Begelton made two catches for 56 yards, and Clint Barnes made two catches for 30 yards. Calgary’s defense made two sacks and one tackle for loss.

Third Quarter:

Edmonton got the ball to start the second half from their 39-yard line. The offense picked up 18 yards but a couple of penalties ended their drive. Calgary’s offense started on their 20-yard line.

Calgary running back Dedrick Mills started the drive with a seven-yard run, followed by quarterback Matthew Shiltz’s 19-yard run to reach their 46-yard line. On second down, quarterback Matthew Shiltz’s pass intended for Cole Tucker was incomplete.

Calgary head coach Dave Dickenson challenged the play for defensive pass interference and won. Despite winning the challenge, Calgary running back Dedrick Mills rushed for two more yards then the drive stalled.

Edmonton had the ball on their 26-yard line. Quarterback Tre Ford completed two passes for 16 yards, and running back Javon Leake rushed for one yard to reach their 41-yard line short of the first down. However, Edmonton would get a fresh set of downs after punter Jake Julien took a hard hit by Calgary linebacker Marquel Lee placing the ball on their 41-yard line.

Edmonton running back Justin Rankin rushed for a gain of four yards to reach their 55-yard line and that was all they got. Edmonton punter Jake Julien punted the ball 65 yards into the end zone where Calgary returner Peyton Logan conceded the single point. Edmonton now led Calgary 17-5 with 5:13 left of the third quarter.

For the rest of the third quarter, Calgary’s offense struggled with 18 yards in two possessions, and Edmonton had 37 yards on offense. On the last play of the third quarter, Calgary punter Cody Grace punted the ball 44 yards to Loucheiz Purifoy for a gain of four yards to reach their 38-yard line to begin the fourth quarter up 17-5.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Edmonton running back Justin Rankin rushed for a gain of 27 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 45-yard line before the drive stalled. Calgary’s offense was back out on the field from their 30-yard line with 12:57 left of the game. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz started the drive by completing two passes for 13 yards to reach their 43-yard line.

On the next play, Shiltz was sacked by Edmonton defensive lineman Daniel Joseph for a loss of three yards. Shiltz came back on the next play by throwing a 20-yard pass to Marken Michel to reach their 48-yard line.

They continued to march down the field reaching the three-yard line before Shiltz threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Philpot. Calgary tried a two-point conversion but did not get it. They trailed Edmonton 17-11 with 7:30 left of the game to cap off a 12-play drive for 80 yards in over six minutes.

On the second play for Edmonton, quarterback Tre Ford’s pass was intercepted by Clarence Hicks on the Elks’ 29-yard line giving Calgary new life. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz rushed for 16 yards, and Kylin Hill rushed for nine yards to reach the Elks’ 4-yard line. On the next play, Tommy Stevens was set up in a quarterback sneak position. He rushed to his right side to score a four-yard touchdown giving the Stampeders an 18-17 lead with 4:38 left of the game.

Edmonton running back Justin Rankin started the next drive with three carries for 46 yards, including a 38-yard run to reach the Stampeders’ 40-yard line. Quarterback Tre Ford threw an eight-yard pass to Kurleigh Gittens Jr. before Justin Rankin had two more carries for 17 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 10-yard line.

On the next play, quarterback Tre Ford scrambled out of the pocket before throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Lewis for a 23-18 lead with 1:09 left of the game capping off an eight-play drive for 86 yards.

Calgary had the ball for the final 1:05 of the game. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed three passes for 30 yards and rushed for a gain of nine yards to reach the Elks’ 34-yard line. On third down, Shiltz’s pass intended for Marken Michel was incomplete.

However, a defensive pass interference penalty on Kai Gray gave Calgary one last shot from the one-yard line with two seconds left. On the final play, Shiltz tried to throw the ball to Reggie Begelton but he overthrew him and the game was over.

The Edmonton Elks held on to beat the Calgary Stampeders 23-18 completing the season sweep. Meanwhile, Calgary’s losing streak reaches eight games.

Final Stats:

Edmonton had 389 yards on offense (208 yards passing, 201 yards rushing, 20 yards lost), 22 first downs, 3 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized 11 times for 112 yards. Quarterback Tre Ford completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3%) for 208 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and three carries for 33 yards. Running back Justin Rankin had 10 carries for 140 yards.

Wide receiver Tevin Jones made six catches for 76 yards, while Eugene Lewis made six catches for 46 yards, one touchdown, one carry for 15 yards, and one touchdown. Edmonton’s defense made 40 tackles, one tackle for loss, five sacks, one interception, and six tackles on special teams.

Calgary had 215 yards on offense (134 yards passing, 22 yards rushing, 22 yards lost), 22 first downs, 2 for 4 in the red zone, and the team was penalized nine times for 99 yards. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 18 of 33 passes (55%) for 215 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and five carries for 64 yards. Running back Dedrick Mills had seven carries for 36 yards.

Wide receiver Reggie Begelton made five catches for 79 yards, and Marken Michel made three catches for 42 yards. Calgary’s defense made 44 tackles, two sacks, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, one fumble recovery, and seven tackles on special teams.
