The Edmonton Elks released wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr., offensive lineman Eric Miller, defensive lineman John McCartan, defensive back Myles Brooks, and placekicker Campbell Fair from the practice squad on Sunday.
Dontay Demus Jr. is six foot three and weighs 218 pounds. The 24-year-old from Washington, D.C., signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2023. He made 3 catches for 97 yards in three preseason games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. After the preseason, Demus Jr. was signed to the practice squad but was released on October 3, 2023.
After Baltimore, Demus Jr. signed with the Philadelphia Stars on December 6, 2023, but the USFL and XFL merged into the UFL and the Stars were not included for the 2024 season. The Ottawa Redblacks signed Demus Jr. on January 22, 2024. He was released on May 15, 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed Demus Jr. on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad.
Collegiately, Demus Jr. played five seasons at the University of Maryland (2018-22) with 128 catches for 2,008 yards, 14 touchdowns, 1 carry for 4 yards, and 5 kick returns for 95 yards in 47 games for the Terrapins. He is a three-time All-Big 10 Honorable Mention.
Eric Miller is six foot eight and weighs 311 pounds. The 24-year-old from Mason, Ohio, signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2024. He was released by the Bengals on August 23, 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed Miller on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad.
Collegiately, Miller played four seasons at Purdue University (2019-22) playing left tackle and right tackle in 56 games for the Boilermakers. In 2022, he helped Purdue’s offense lead the Big Ten in passing with 276 yards per game, and helped running back Devin Mockobee break the Purdue freshman rushing record with 968 yards on the ground.
Then, Miller transferred to Louisville in 2023 starting 14 games for the Cardinals allowing two sacks, and 24 quarterback hurries over 920 blocking snaps. He was named an All-ACC Honorable Mention after the season.
John McCartan is six foot five and weighs 243 pounds. The 25-year-old from Rancho Santa Margarita, California, attended a rookie minicamp with the Chicago Bears in 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed McCartan on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad.
Collegiately, McCartan played five seasons at Oregon State (2018-23) making 132 tackles (77 solo, 55 assists), 20 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, four interceptions for 31 yards, five pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 54 games for the Beavers.
Myles Brooks is six foot one and weighs 198 pounds. The 23-year-old from Pflugerville, Texas, signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2023. In 2023, Brooks made two tackles (1 solo, 1 assist) in three preseason games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023.
Then, Brooks signed with the Montreal Alouettes on January 4, 2024. Brooks appeared in one regular season game for the Alouettes against the Edmonton Elks making one tackle on special teams. The Alouettes released him on June 17, 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed Brooks on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad.
Collegiately, Brooks played three seasons at Stephen F. Austin (2019-21) with 65 tackles (41 solo, 24 assists), half a tackle for loss, six interceptions for 47 yards, one touchdown, 23 pass breakups, and two catches for 15 yards in 31 games for the Lumberjacks.
Then, Brooks transferred to Louisiana Tech in 2022 with 29 tackles (22 solo, 7 assists), three tackles for loss, three interceptions for 94 yards, one touchdown, 12 pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 12 games for the Bulldogs. He was named Second Team All-C-USA in 2022.
Campbell Fair is six foot one and weighs 180 pounds. The 24-year-old from Carrying Place, Ontario, was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the sixth round (51st pick) in the 2023 CFL Draft. He had a brief stint in Calgary before joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders practice squad upon returning to the University of Ottawa.
Fair re-signed with the Calgary Stampeders on November 20, 2023. Fair played two preseason games making 6 of 6 field goals with a long of 34 yards, converted four extra points, and 12 kickoffs for 771 yards. The Stampeders released him on June 1, 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed Fair on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad.
Campbell Fair played five seasons at the University of Ottawa (2018-23) converting 62 of 88 field goals (70%) with a long of 55 yards, making 80 of 83 extra points (266 points), 153 punts for 6,017 yards with a long of 68 yards, and 22 punts from inside the 20-yard line. He was named OUA Second Team All-Star and the Chris Evraire Award for Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2022.
