The Saskatchewan Roughriders re-signed quarterback Michael Hiers to a future contract beginning in 2025 on Wednesday according to the CFL Transactions page.
Michael Hiers is six foot one and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, attended the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie minicamp in 2024. The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Hiers on September 17, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad. The Roughriders released him on October 13, 2024.
Collegiately, Hiers played one season at Murray State in 2019 completing one pass for four yards, and three carries for 19 yards in two games for the Racers. Next, he transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College (2020-21) completing 306 of 469 passes (65%) for 4,519 yards, 34 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 72 carries for -23 yards, and six touchdowns in 18 games for the Rangers.
He was named First Team All-American by JCGridiron.com, two-time First Team All-MACCC, All-Mississippi Gridiron MVP, and the co-MACCC Offensive Player of the Year.
Then, Hiers transferred to Samford (2022-23) completing 668 of 903 passes (74%) for 6,600 yards, 54 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 182 carries for 97 yards, six touchdowns, and two tackles (1 solo, 1 assist) in 24 games for the Bulldogs.
In 2023, Hiers completed 315 of 442 passes (71%) for 3,056 yards, 18 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 73 carries for -66 yards, and three touchdowns. He helped the Bulldogs win their first SoCon title in school history and reach the FCS playoffs for the first time since 1991.
He was named Second Team All-American by AP, Third Team All-American by STATS, First Team All-Southern Conference, and Second Team All-Southern Conference. Hiers ranked in the top 10 nationally in completion percentage (76.6%/1st), completions per game (27.15/3rd), passing efficiency (165.2/8th), passing touchdowns (36/4th), and passing yards (3,544/6th).
