Hamilton ends the home regular season with a beatdown over Calgary

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7-10) hosted the Calgary Stampeders (4-12-1) on Friday night in their last home game of the season at Tim Hortons Field. This was the second meeting of the season. They met in Week 1 in Calgary where the Stampeders won the game 32-24.

For both of these teams, the 2025 season started with players auditioning for roster spots either with their current teams or a new home next season. For Hamilton, they wanted to give the home crowd a show and they did just that.

First Quarter:

The Calgary Stampeders got the ball to start to game from their 38-yard line. Running back Dedrick Mills and third-string quarterback Tommy Stevens began the drive combining with three carries logging 21 yards to reach the Ticats’ 51-yard line. Next, quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed an 8-yard pass to Jalen Philpot to reach the Ticats’ 43-yard line.

Quarterback Matthew Shiltz, and running backs Dedrick Mills and Kylin Hill combined with three carries logging 11 yards, followed by Shiltz completing a four-yard pass to Dedrick Mills to reach the Ticats’ 28-yard line. On the next play, Shiltz attempted to complete a pass to Cam Echols but former Stampeder Jonathan Moxey read the play to make the interception with 9:38 left.

Hamilton started its first drive from their 31-yard line. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed five passes for 58 yards, running backs Ante Milanovic-Litre and Greg Bell combined with two carries logging five yards, and a roughing the passer penalty on Micah Awe placed the ball on the Stampeders’ 8-yard line.

Then, Mitchell threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Tim White for a 7-0 lead with 5:16 left of the first quarter capping off an eight-play drive for 79 yards in over four minutes. With the touchdown, Tim White surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the season.

Calgary started its next drive from their 20-yard line. Running back Dedrick Mills rushed for four yards to start the next drive and that was all they got before punting the ball back to Hamilton. During the punt, Calgary punter Cody Grace shanked it and Hamilton got terrific field position from the Stampeders’ 31-yard line with 3:58 left.

On the first play, Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell got good protection from his offensive line before throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to Tim White extending their lead 14-0 with 3:38 left.  

Calgary’s offense continued to struggle. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed a six-yard pass to Reggie Begelton and running back Dedrick Mills rushed for a two-yard gain reaching their 44-yard line facing third down. Hamilton got the ball on their 36-yard line.

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw two passes for 33 yards, and running back Greg Bell had two carries for 14 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 27-yard line to end the first quarter up 14-0.

Hamilton had 149 yards on offense (130 yards passing, 19 yards rushing), 9 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team had no penalties. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 9 of 10 passes for 130 yards, and two touchdowns.

Calgary had 56 yards on offense (18 yards passing, 38 yards rushing), three first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized three times for 28 yards. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards, one interception, and one carry for three yards.

Second Quarter:

In the second quarter, Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell rolled to his right side before throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Jevoni Robinson. However, kicker Marc Liegghio missed the extra point and it was 20-0 Hamilton with 14:15 left capping off a six-play drive for 74 yards in a minute and 48 seconds.

After Calgary went two-and-out, Hamilton’s offense returned to the field from the Stampeders’ 33-yard line. Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 3 of 4 passes for 74 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 6-yard line. On the next play, Mitchell threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Steven Dunbar Jr. for a 27-0 lead with 10:15 left of the second quarter to cap off a five-play drive for 80 yards.

Calgary’s offense made some progress on their next drive. Running back Dedrick Mills started the drive with a six-yard run, followed by quarterback Matthew Shiltz completing a 17-yard pass to Marken Michel to reach the Ticats’ 48-yard line.

Then, quarterbacks Matthew Shiltz and Tommy Stevens combined with two carries logging 12 yards to reach the Ticats’ 36-yard line. The drive ended when Hamilton linebacker Ray Wilborn stripped the ball out running back Kylin Hill’s arm and Casey Sayles recovered it on their 34-yard line with 7:16 left before halftime.

For the first time in this game, Hamilton gained 15 yards then the drive stalled. Calgary took over and quarterback Matthew Shiltz rushed for a gain of three yards to reach their 29-yard line but went two-and-out.

Then Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed a 28-yard pass to reach the Stampeders’ 39-yard line. Running back Greg Bell had three carries for 32 yards but an unnecessary roughness penalty on Hamilton placed the ball on the Stampeders’ 22-yard line. Kicker Marc Liegghio made a 29-yard field goal for a 30-0 lead with 2:12 left before halftime.

Calgary quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed two passes for 18 yards and rushed for five yards while running back Dedrick Mills had two carries for 9 yards to reach the Ticats’ 38-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 45-yard field goal and Calgary trailed Hamilton 30-3 with 1:07 left.

Hamilton running back Greg Bell rushed for six yards to reach their 46-yard line. Next, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed a four-yard pass to Kiondre Smith moving the ball up to their 50-yard line.

Two plays later, Mitchell attempted to complete a pass to Dezmon Patmon but Patmon slipped on the field and Tre Roberson intercepted it for a pick-six 65-yard touchdown. Kicker Rene Paredes missed the extra point and Calgary trailed Hamilton 30-9 at halftime.

First Half Stats:

Hamilton had 339 yards on offense (281 yards passing, 60 yards rushing, 2 yards lost), 18 first downs, 2 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized one time for 15 yards. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 17 of 23 passes (74%) for 281 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.  Running back Greg Bell had eight carries for 57 yards.

Wide receiver Steven Dunbar Jr. made five catches for 92 yards, and one touchdown, while Tim White made four catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Hamilton’s defense made one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Calgary had 131 yards on offense (53 yards passing, 78 yards rushing), 7 first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized three times for 28 yards. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 6 of 11 passes (55%) for 53 yards, one interception, and four carries for 20 yards. Running back Dedrick Mills had eight carries for 39 yards, and one carry for four yards.

Wide receiver Marken Michel made two catches for 26 yards, and Clint Barnes made one catch for nine yards. Calgary’s defense made one interception and one touchdown.

Third Quarter:

Hamilton got the ball to start the second half from their 42-yard line. On the first play, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed a short pass to Steven Dunbar Jr. for 40 yards.

During the play, Calgary defensive back Kobe Williams punched the ball out of Dunbar Jr.’s arm and the ball tumbled into the end zone and out of bounds before Calgary could touch the ball resulting in Hamilton keeping the ball on the Stampeders’ 28-yard line.

Bo Levi Mitchell completed an 8-yard pass to Dezmon Patmon, and running back Ante Milanovic-Litre rushed for a gain of 10 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 10-yard then the drive stalled. Kicker Marc Liegghio made an 18-yard field goal for a 33-9 lead with 12:08 left of the third quarter.

Calgary began its first drive of the second half from their 40-yard line. Running back Dedrick Mills rushed for 14 yards to reach their 54-yard line. Next, quarterback Matthew Shiltz attempted to complete a pass to Clint Barnes but it was incomplete. However, a defensive pass interference penalty on Jonathan Moxey gave Calgary a fresh set of downs from the Ticats’ 25-yard line.

Running back Kylin Hill had two carries for 10 yards reaching the Ticats’ 15-yard line. Then, quarterback Matthew Shiltz could not find an open receiver before taking off. He ran up the middle untouched scoring a 15-yard touchdown. Calgary successfully converted the two-point conversion and Calgary trailed Hamilton 33-17 with 9:23 left of the third quarter to cap off a five-play drive for 70 yards.

Hamilton went two-and-out on their next drive, and Calgary got the ball back with 8:21 left. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed a 9-yard pass to Jalen Philpot. Two plays later, Shiltz could not find anyone open and took off a 7-yard run before taking a couple of big hits that knocked the wind out of him, and he was down for several minutes. Shiltz had the trainers with him when he walked to the sidelines. Jake Maier was the new quarterback for Calgary.

Calgary’s offense continued to march down the field until they reached the Ticats’ 14-yard line then the drive stalled. Kicker Rene Paredes kicked a 42-yard field goal and Calgary trailed Hamilton 33-20 with 3:48 left of the third quarter.

For the rest of the third quarter, Hamilton’s offense gained 11 yards but an objectional conduct penalty and a Clarence Hicks sack backed Hamilton to their 52-yard line forcing third down. On the last play of the third quarter, Calgary quarterback Jake Maier’s pass intended for Clint Barnes was incomplete. Calgary trailed Hamilton 33-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Calgary’s offense reached their 55-yard line then punting the ball back to Hamilton with 12:55 left of the game. Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed two passes for 66 yards, including 55 yards to Tim White to reach the Stampeders’ 32-yard line. After Greg Bell rushed for five yards, kicker Marc Liegghio made a 35-yard field goal for a 36-20 lead with 10:17 left.

Matthew Shiltz returned to the field for Calgary. He completed a 20-yard pass to Marken Michel and rushed for one yard. Running back Kylin Hill rushed for five yards setting up third down. Calgary went for it on third down but did not get it and Hamilton took over on their 38-yard line.

Hamilton running back Greg Bell rushed for 10 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 41-yard line. Next, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed a pass to Kiondre Smith for 27 yards to reach the Stampeders’ 14-yard line. Two plays later, Mitchell threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Steven Dunbar Jr. They went for a two-point conversion and did not get it. It was now 42-20 Hamilton with 6:39 left of the game capping off a four-play drive for 51 yards. In addition, Mitchell now had 5,000 passing yards for the season.

Calgary quarterback Matthew Shiltz threw three straight completions for 39 yards to reach the Ticats’ 33-yard line. On third down, Shiltz’s pass intended for Clint Barnes was broken up by Will Sunderland but a roughing the passer penalty on Dewayne Hendrix gave Calgary an automatic first down. They were unable to take advantage and ended up turning the ball over to Hamilton with 2:05 left of the game.

Hamilton running backs Ante Milanovic-Litre and Greg Bell combined with four carries for 64 yards to seal the game. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the Calgary Stampeders 42-20 to end their home regular season. Meanwhile, the Calgary Stampeders have now lost nine straight games.

Final Stats:

Hamilton had 583 yards on offense (450 yards passing, 156 yards rushing, 23 yards lost), 29 first downs, 3 for 5 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 71 yards. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell completed 24 of 37 passes (65%) for 450 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Greg Bell had 15 carries for 139 yards and three catches for 23 yards.

Wide receiver Steven Dunbar Jr. made 7 catches for 146 yards, and two touchdowns, while Tim White made five catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Hamilton’s defense made 39 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and eight tackles on special teams.

Calgary had 312 yards on offense (154 yards passing, 158 rushing), 19 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized six times for 48 yards. Quarterback Matthew Shiltz completed 12 of 24 passes (50%) for 124 yards, one interception, seven carries for 43 yards, and one touchdown. Jake Maier completed 2 of 5 passes (40%) for 30 yards.

Running back Dedrick Mills had 12 carries for 76 yards and one catch for four yards. Wide receiver Marken Michel made three catches for 46 yards, and Reggie Begelton made four catches for 39 yards. Calgary’s defense made 42 tackles, one tackle for loss, two sacks, one interception, and one touchdown.
