The Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-8-1) hosted the Calgary Stampeders (5-12-1) on Saturday night at Mosaic Stadium to conclude the 2024 CFL regular season. Before the game took place, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the Montreal Alouettes to clinch the West Division title.

Saskatchewan had their starters ready to go in case Winnipeg lost. Once the results in Montreal went final, Saskatchewan made changes to their roster by playing their backups and third-stringers in the season finale.

First Quarter:

Calgary got the ball to start the game from their 41-yard line after a 34-yard return by Peyton Logan. Quarterback Jake Maier completed two passes for two yards and running back Dedrick Mills rushed for a gain of six yards then the drive stalled. Saskatchewan got the ball with 12:10 from their 36-yard line.

Quarterback Shea Patterson completed an 8-yard pass to Colton Hunchak to reach their 44-yard line. Saskatchewan’s offense marched down to the Stampeders’ 21-yard line then kicker Brett Lauther made a 29-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 7:33 left of the first quarter.

For the next four possessions, Calgary had four yards on two drives and Saskatchewan had -1 yard. Calgary got the ball back with 2:28 left. Quarterback Jake Maier completed a 40-yard pass to Clint Barnes reaching the Roughriders’ 33-yard line. Then, with pressure on him, Maier threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Clark Barnes again for a 7-3 lead with 57 seconds left of the first quarter to cap off a two-play drive for 73 yards.

Saskatchewan had the ball for the final 33 seconds from their 35-yard line. Running back Frankie Hickson had two carries for 15 yards to end the first quarter down 7-3.

Calgary had 85 yards on offense (75 yards passing, 10 yards rushing), 3 first downs, no penalties, and no red zone opportunities. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 4 of 9 passes for 75 yards, and one touchdown. Saskatchewan had 67 yards on offense (39 yards passing, 28 yards rushing), 4 first downs, no penalties, and no red zone opportunities. Quarterback Shea Patterson completed 3 of 8 passes for 39 yards.

Second Quarter:

In the second quarter, Saskatchewan punted the ball to Calgary with 14:11 left. Running back Dedrick Mills rushed for six yards and quarterback Jake Maier completed a two-yard pass to Cam Echols short of the first down. On Saskatchewan’s next possession, they went two-and-out. Calgary got the ball back with 11:18 left before halftime from the Roughriders’ 44-yard line.

Then, Maier completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cam Echols extending their lead 14-3 with 7:23 left before halftime to cap off a six-play drive for 46 yards.

For the rest of the second quarter, Calgary’s offense had 48 yards, while Saskatchewan’s offense had 39 yards, and the defense had one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Calgary led Saskatchewan 14-3 at halftime.

First Half Stats:

Calgary had 192 yards on offense (160 yards passing, 32 yards rushing), 8 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized one time for 5 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 13 of 18 passes (72%) for 160 yards, and two touchdowns. Running back Dedrick Mills had 8 carries for 32 yards and one catch for seven yards.

Wide receiver Clark Barnes made three catches for 90 yards, and one touchdown, while Cam Echols made two catches for 11 yards and one touchdown. Calgary’s defense made one sack.

Saskatchewan had 104 yards on offense (71 yards passing, 33 yards rushing), 6 first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized one time for 8 yards. Quarterback Shea Patterson completed 5 of 12 passes (41.6%) for 56 yards, and Jack Coan completed 2 of 4 passes (50%) for 15 yards. Running back Frankie Hickson had seven carries for 33 yards.

Wide receiver Mitchell Picton made three catches for 24 yards, and Colton Hunchak made two catches for 20 yards. Saskatchewan’s defense made one tackle for loss, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Third Quarter:

Saskatchewan got the ball to start the second half from their 39-yard line. Frankie Hickson started the drive with a four-yard run. Then, quarterback Jack Doan completed a 17-yard pass to Jerreth Sterns, followed by an 8-yard run by Doan to reach the Stampeders’ 42-yard line. Kicker Brett Lauther made a 50-yard field goal and Saskatchewan trailed Calgary 14-6 with 12:08 left.

Calgary started on their 40-yard line. Quarterback Jake Maier completed a short pass to Dedrick Mills for 29 yards to reach the Roughriders’ 41-yard line. Then, running backs Dedrick Mills and Peyton Logan combined with four carries logging 27 yards to reach the Roughriders’ 14-yard line then the drive stalled. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 20-yard field goal for a 17-6 lead with 8:10 left of the third quarter.

Saskatchewan went two-and-out on their next drive. Calgary got the ball back with 6:47 left. Calgary’s offense marched down to the Roughriders’ 27-yard line. Then, running back Peyton Logan had the ball stripped by Caleb Sanders and it was recovered by Benoit Marion on the Roughriders’ 29-yard line.

Once again, Saskatchewan’s offense went two-and-out. Calgary’s offense started on their 40-yard line with 49 seconds left. Quarterback Jake Maier completed a 9-yard pass to Jalen Philpot, followed by Tommy Stevens getting two carries for three yards to end the third quarter up 17-6.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Calgary quarterback Jake Maier threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Marken Michel for a 24-6 lead with 14:25 left to cap off a seven-play drive for 91 yards.

Saskatchewan running back Frankie Hickson had two carries for 9 yards, while quarterback Jack Coan completed a 9-yard pass to Mitchell Picton and rushed for one yard then the drive stalled. Calgary started its next drive from their 12-yard line.

Running back Dedrick Mills had two carries for four yards, and quarterback Jake Maier completed a 9-yard pass to Jalen Philpot to reach their 25-yard line. The drive would end when Maier was sacked by Jayden Dalke for a 10-yard loss.

Calgary punter Cody Grace punted the ball 52 yards toward Mario Alford. He turned on the jets before getting his facemask pulled down to the ground. Calgary was penalized for the facemask penalty and Saskatchewan’s offense started on the Stampeders’ 19-yard line.

On the first play, quarterback Jack Coan threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jerreth Sterns. They went for a two-point conversion but did not get it. Saskatchewan trailed Calgary 24-12 with 7:07 left of the game.

Calgary’s offense was back out on the field with 6:42 left from the Roughriders 38-yard line after Peyton Logan’s 42-yard run plus a horse collar tackle penalty. Running back Dedrick Mills had two carries for two yards and Jake Maier had one carry for seven yards reaching the Roughriders’ 29-yard line then the drive stalled. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 37-yard field goal for a 27-12 lead with 3:45 left of the game.

In the next two possessions, both teams went two-and-out. Saskatchewan got the ball on the Stampeders’ 52-yard line with 1:49 left. Quarterback Jack Coan completed three passes for 32 yards and rushed for five yards to reach the Stampeders’ 11-yard line. On third down, Coan’s pass intended for Frankie Hickson was incomplete and Calgary took over with 47 seconds left.

Calgary running back Dedrick Mills sealed the game with a 61-yard run reaching the Roughriders’ 38-yard line. The Calgary Stampeders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 27-12.

Final Stats:

Calgary had 437 yards on offense (293 yards passing, 165 yards passing, 21 yards lost), 19 first downs, 1 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 50 yards. Quarterback Jake Maier completed 19 of 26 passes (73%) for 293 yards, three touchdowns, and two carries for 14 yards. Running back Dedrick Mills had 20 carries for 128 yards, and two catches for 36 yards.

Wide receiver Clark Barnes made three catches for 90 yards, and one touchdown, while Marken Michel made two catches for 65 yards and one touchdown. Calgary’s defense made 33 tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble, and nine tackles for loss.

Saskatchewan had 210 yards on offense (156 yards passing, 68 yards rushing, 14 yards lost), 13 first downs, 1 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 53 yards. Quarterback Jack Coan completed 10 of 21 passes (48%) for 100 yards, one touchdown, and three carries for 14 yards. Running back Frankie Hickson had 12 carries for 54 yards.

Wide receiver Jerreth Sterns made four catches for 69 yards, and one touchdown, while Mitchell Picton made five catches for 37 yards. Saskatchewan’s defense made 44 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 10 tackles on special teams.
