The Memphis Showboats signed defensive tackle Owen “Boogie” Roberts on Friday according to the Pro Football Newsroom writer James Larsen.
Owen “Boogie” Roberts is six foot two and weighs 290 pounds. The 28-year-old from Los Angeles, California, signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2019. In 2019, he made 8 tackles (6 solos, 2 assists) and one sack in four preseason games. The Rams released him on August 30, 2019.
The Los Angeles Wildcats (XFL) drafted Roberts in the 10th round (77th pick) in Phase 3 of the 2020 XFL Draft. In 2020, Roberts made 14 tackles (8 solos, 6 assists), half a sack, one fumble recovery, one touchdown, and one carry for -1 yard in five games before the league shutdown due to COVID-19.
Next, the Pittsburgh Maulers (USFL) drafted Roberts in the 25th round (202nd pick) of the 2022 USFL Draft. In 2022, Roberts made 24 tackles (10 solos, 14 assists) and one tackle for loss in nine games. In 2023, Roberts made 32 tackles (19 solos, 13 assists), 8 tackles for loss, and three sacks in 10 games. In the 2023 USFL playoffs, he made one tackle (1 assist) in two games on his way to being named to the All-USFL Team.
The Maulers were not included in the USFL and XFL merger that formed the United Football League (UFL). Roberts was drafted by the D.C. Defenders in the 2024 UFL Super Draft. The Defenders released him on March 10, 2024.
Collegiately, Roberts played four seasons at San Jose State (2015-18) making 146 tackles (71 solos, 75 assists), 24 tackles for loss, six sacks, two fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles in 47 games for the Spartans. He concluded his collegiate career by playing in the 2019 Spiral Tropical All-Star Game.
