Villanova closes out regular season with a win over Delaware

The Villanova Wildcats (9-3) hosted the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens (9-2) in the 58th annual Battle of the Blue from Villanova Stadium. Villanova had 362 yards on offense (203 yards passing, 159 yards rushing), and 18 first downs in a 38-28 win over the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

This was Delaware’s last game in the FCS and they are ineligible for the FCS playoffs. They are moving to the FBS level next year. They will compete in Conference USA.

Villanova quarterback Connor Watkins completed 13 of 30 passes (43%) for 203 yards, one touchdown, one interception, eight carries for 79 yards, and one touchdown. Running back David Avit had six carries for 29 yards, one touchdown, and three catches for 22 yards, while Brendan Bell had one carry for six yards and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Jaylan Sanchez made two catches for 46 yards, while Kenyon Miles made one catch for 36 yards, and one touchdown. Villanova’s defense made 67 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

Delaware had 409 yards on offense (213 yards passing, 196 yards rushing), and 22 first downs. Quarterback Nick Minicucci completed 18 of 33 passes (54.5%) for 198 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, and 15 carries for 16 yards. Running back Marcus Yarns had 20 carries for 100 yards, one touchdown, three catches for 74 yards, and one touchdown, while JoJo Bermudez had one carry for 14 yards and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Phil Lutz made four catches for 47 yards, while Jo’Nathan Silver made three catches for 29 yards and one touchdown. Delaware’s defense made 55 tackles, six tackles for loss, one interception, and two pass breakups.

Villanova will now wait to see if they qualify for the FCS playoffs. The bracket will be revealed on Sunday, November 24, 2024.
