The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and linebacker Tony Jones agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2026 season on Wednesday.
Tony Jones is six foot two and weighs 235 pounds. The 29-year-old from Casselberry, Florida, signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 10, 2024. In 2024, Jones made 49 tackles, 11 tackles on special teams, one interception, and one forced fumble in 12 games helping the Blue Bombers reach the 111th Grey Cup.
In 2021, Jones played for the Iowa Barnstormers (IFL) making 79 tackles (52 solos, 27 assists), 9 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in eleven games. He was named the IFL Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie Team, and Defensive Player of the Year.
Next, Jones signed with the Toronto Argonauts on December 14, 2021. He spent most of the 2022 season on the practice squad. Toronto released him on July 2, 2022.
The Edmonton Elks signed Jones on September 12, 2022. In 2022, Jones made two tackles and two tackles on special teams in two games. In 2023, Jones made 41 tackles, 11 tackles on special teams, one sack, and one forced fumble in 18 games.
The Elks re-signed Jones on February 2, 2024. He made four tackles in two preseason games. The Elks released him on June 1, 2024.
Collegiately, Jones played two seasons at Butler Community College (2015-16) with 176 tackles (107 solos, 69 assists), 33 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, six pass breakups, and one interception in 22 games for the Grizzlies.
Then, he transferred to Texas Tech (2017-18) with 77 tackles (47 solos, 30 assists), 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, and three fumble recoveries in 24 games for the Red Raiders.
