The Hamilton Tiger-Cats named former Winnipeg Blue Bombers senior assistant general manager and director of player personnel Ted Goveia as the new general manager on Thursday.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Ted as our new general manager,” said President of Football Operations Orlondo Steinauer. “Ted’s extensive knowledge, leadership, and experience, combined with his championship pedigree, make him a tremendous addition to our organization. We are confident that his vision will help us achieve our ultimate goal of bringing another Grey Cup to Hamilton.”
Ted Goveia is from Burlington, Ontario. He spent ten seasons in Winnipeg running the scouting department that included the United States and Canada while playing a key role in player recruitment and contract negotiations. His efforts led the Blue Bombers to win five consecutive Western Division titles and appear in the Grey Cup five straight seasons winning two of them in 2019 and 2021.
“I’m honored to be given this opportunity with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats,” said Goveia. “Having grown up in the area, I understand how much the Tiger-Cats mean to this community. I’d like to thank Scott Mitchell, Bob Young, Stelco, and the Hamilton Sports Group, along with Orlondo Steinauer, Matt Afinec, and the entire Ticats organization, for their trust and belief in me. I’m incredibly excited to get started.”
Goveia joined the Toronto Argonauts in 2010 as a director of Canadian scouting (2010-2012) and director of player personnel (2013), in addition to a stint as the team’s running backs coach in 2010 and 2011. His efforts helped the Argonauts win the 100th Grey Cup over the Calgary Stampeders in 2012. In his final season with Toronto, the Argonauts made it to the Eastern Final but lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013.
Before joining the CFL, Goveia spent 15 years coaching football. He began his coaching career in 1994 at Mount Allison University helping them reach the AUS Finals in back-to-back seasons before winning the Jewett Cup in 1997. In 2001, he joined the McMaster Marauders as a recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator.
Goveia helped the Marauders recruit 36 OUA All-Stars and 15 All-Canadian players. McMaster won 33 straight regular season games and three straight Yates Cup Championships while he was there. Then, he joined the UBC Thunderbirds as the offensive coordinator in 2005 and was promoted to head coach and general manager in 2006.
Goveia also coached in the CJFL with the Burlington Braves and Oakville Longhorns and served as a member of the Football Canada Board of Directors.
