The Calgary Stampeders finalized their coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season on Monday with the hiring of six new coaches as announced by head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson.
Joining the Calgary Stampeders this year is John Bowman as a defensive line coach, Barron Miles as the defensive backs coach, Markus Howell as the receivers coach, Marcus Klund will be the linebackers and run game coordinator coach, and Ucambre Williams will take the role of running backs and offensive line coach.
Returning to Calgary are Bob Slowik, who was the linebackers coach for five years and will now be the new defensive coordinator, Pat DelMonaco will remain the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Beau Baldwin will remain the quarterbacks coach, and Craig Dickenson, who was a senior consultant, will now be the special teams coordinator coach.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Cameron, who was the defensive backs coach for five seasons, will now be the director of Canadian scouting and U.S. scout.
Bob Slowik is 70 years old. He played college football at the University of Delaware as a two-year starter at cornerback. Slowik began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Delaware. He would also coach at Florida, Rutgers, and East Carolina. In 1992, he was a defensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys winning Super Bowl XXVII over the Buffalo Bills.
Slowik also coached for the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, and the Washington Redskins. In 2019, he was the defensive coordinator for the Montreal Alouettes. His son, Bobby Slowik, is the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.
Craig Dickenson is 53 years old and is from Great Falls, Montana. He was the Saskatchewan Roughriders Special Teams Coordinator before becoming the 47th Head Coach in Saskatchewan’s history on January 25, 2019.
As a coach, Dickenson went 34-34, winning the West Division one time in 2019. He guided the Roughriders to two Western Finals but lost twice to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Dickenson made his way to the CFL in 2002 as the Calgary Stampeders Running Backs Coach. In 2003, he left Calgary to take the same position with the Montreal Alouettes before returning to Calgary in 2004.
In 2005, he was promoted to Special Teams Coordinator. He spent five seasons in Calgary before leaving for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders as an Assistant Special Teams Coordinator in 2010. In 2011, he joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders as the Special Teams Coordinator. He was there for two years before leaving to take the same position with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2013.
After Winnipeg, he spent two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos (now Elks) as the Special Teams Coordinator before returning to Saskatchewan in 2016. He held the position for four years before adding Head Coach to his resume.
John Bowman was the B.C. Lions defensive line coach in 2024. The 42-year-old from Brooklyn, New York, played 14 seasons with the Montreal Alouettes making 481 tackles, five tackles on special teams, six pass breakups, 15 fumble recoveries, one touchdown, 133 sacks, and one interception for two yards in 230 games winning two Grey Cup championships in 2009 and 2010. He was named a two-time CFL All-Star (2010, 2015), and a nine-time CFL East All-Star (2009-10, 2012-15, 2017-19). He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2023.
Barron Miles is 52 years old and is from Roselle, New Jersey. In 2024, Ottawa’s defense ranked fifth in touchdowns allowed (45), sixth in average points allowed (27.1), net offense allowed (370.1), and takeaways (31), and tied second in sacks (39).
As a player, Miles was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round (199th pick) of the 1995 NFL Draft. A knee injury in a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills ended his season. In 1997, he played for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the NFL Europe league.
In 1998, Miles joined the Montreal Alouettes. He played six seasons in Montreal making 285 tackles, two tackles on special teams, 30 interceptions for 456 yards, three touchdowns, six sacks, seven fumble recoveries, and two touchdowns in 99 games winning one Grey Cup in 2002.
In 2005, Miles signed with the B.C. Lions. He played five seasons making 219 tackles, two tackles on special teams, four fumble recoveries, one touchdown, one sack, 36 interceptions for 529 yards, and two touchdowns in 88 games. He won another Grey Cup title in 2006.
Miles was a six-time CFL All-Star, five-time CFL East All-Star, and five-time CFL West All-Star. He also won several awards including the Frank M. Gibson Trophy in 1998, the James P. McCaffrey Trophy in 2002, and the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 2004.
Miles retired after the 2009 season before transitioning to coaching. He began his coaching career as a defensive assistant for the B.C. Lions for two seasons. In 2012, he was named defensive backs coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and spent three seasons before moving on to Winnipeg in 2015 taking the same position.
In 2016, Miles was named a defensive back/player development coach. He spent three seasons in Edmonton before taking the same position with the Montreal Alouettes in 2020. However, there was no season in 2020 due to the pandemic. Miles was promoted to defensive coordinator by Montreal in 2021. He spent one and a half seasons before being let go on July 6, 2022.
Collegiately, Miles played three seasons at Nebraska (1992-94) making 101 tackles (59 solo, 42 assists), one tackle for loss, 19 pass breakups, seven interceptions for 35 yards, and seven blocked kicks in 33 games for the Cornhuskers. He was named First Team All-Big 8 and was a member of the National Championship team in 1994.
Markus Howell is 49 years old and is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the Edmonton Elks run game coordinator and receivers coach for two seasons. He began his coaching career in 2011 as a linebackers coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Next, he spent four seasons as a receivers coach for the Blue Bombers winning the 108th Grey Cup. He also coached the Saskatchewan Roughriders, B.C. Lions, and the Toronto Argonauts.
As a player, Howell was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the fourth round (25th pick) of the 2000 CFL Draft. He played 10 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Renegades, and the Calgary Stampeders making 152 catches for 2,093 yards, 9 touchdowns, seven carries for 75 yards, 77 kick returns for 1,679 yards, one touchdown, 246 punt returns for 2,232 yards, one touchdown, 28 tackles, 21 tackles on special teams, two fumble recoveries, and one touchdown in 176 games.
Markus Klund was a defensive backs coach for the Edmonton Elks in 2024. Before Edmonton, he held the same position for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Klund coached at Southwest Baptist University for nine seasons as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
He helped build SBU into one of the top defenses in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, coaching a total of 41 All-Conference selections from 2013 to 2020. Klund also coached at Lindenwood University-Belleville (2012), Lindenwood University (2009-11), and Parkway West High School (2007-08).
Ucambre Williams is 32 years old and is from Phenix City Alabama. He was a guest coach for the Calgary Stampeders in 2024. In 2023, Williams was assistant defensive coordinator at Russell County High School in Seale, Alabama.
As a player, Williams played five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders playing 63 games, and one season for the Ottawa Redblacks playing five games. He helped Calgary win the 106th Grey Cup in 2018 over the Ottawa Redblacks and was named a CFL West All-Star in 2017. Collegiately, Williams played four seasons at South Alabama (2011-14). He was named a two-time Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference (2013-14).
