The Hamilton Tiger-Cats named former Calgary Stampeders defensive coordinator Brent Monson the new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.
Brent Monson is 39 years old and is from Hamilton, Ontario. He started his coaching career as a strength and conditioning coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive backs coach for the Steel City Ironmen of the Ontario Varsity Football League for two seasons.
“It was definitely interesting driving down to the facility today,” says the newly-minted Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator, who becomes a key member of head coach Scott Milanovich’s staff. “I thought of all the times that I was driving down to football games at Ivor Wynne or going to coach somewhere near Ivor Wynne. It was awesome, just taking the drive in. It’s just nice to be here and be home.”
He also was a defensive backs, special teams, and strength and conditioning coach for Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton for four seasons.
Monson was the Stampeders’ defensive coordinator from 2019 to 2024. In 2024, Calgary’s defense ranked last in allowed rushing yards (2,260), eighth in points allowed (527), net offense yards allowed (6,861), third in passing yards allowed (4,850), tied-seventh in sacks (32), and tied for fourth in interceptions (15).
He joined the Stampeders’ coaching staff in 2010 as the linebackers/strength and conditioning coach. He took on defensive line duties along with linebackers/strength and conditioning coach in 2011. Monson would later become a running backs coach, linebackers coach, and defensive coordinator in 2019. He finishes his Calgary coaching career winning two Grey Cup championships in 2014 and 2018.
