The Montreal Alouettes and defensive lineman Lwal Uguak agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2026 season on Wednesday.
Lwal Uguak is six foot five and weighs 271 pounds. The 24-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, attended the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons rookie minicamps in 2023. He also worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. The Montreal Alouettes drafted Uguak in the first round (7th pick) in the 2023 CFL Draft and signed him on May 16, 2023.
In 2023, Uguak made 16 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble in 18 games helping the Alouettes win the 110th Grey Cup over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. After the season, Uguak signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 30, 2024.
He played three preseason games making three tackles (2 solos, 1 assist), one sack, one pass breakup, and two quarterback hits. The Buccaneers released him on September 5, 2024.
The Montreal Alouettes re-signed Uguak on September 18, 2024. In 2024, he made five tackles in five games. In the 2023 Eastern Final against the Toronto Argonauts, Uguak made three tackles and one pass breakup.
Collegiately, Uguak played three seasons at the University of Connecticut (2018-19, 2021) with 69 tackles (31 solos, 38 assists), nine tackles for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 34 games for the Huskies. Then, he transferred to TCU in 2022 with nine tackles (4 solos, 5 assists), half a tackle for loss, and one fumble recovery in 14 games for the Horned Frogs.
