Saskatchewan Roughriders finalizes coaching staff with two new additions

The Saskatchewan Roughriders finalized their coaching staff on Thursday with the hires of Travis Brown as a linebacker coach and Josh Donnelly as an offensive assistant.

Travis Brown will enter his eighth season in the CFL as a linebackers coach. Brown spent the previous six seasons with the B.C. Lions (2019-24). Under his leadership, linebackers Bo Lokombo won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award (2021) and Jordan Williams won the Most Outstanding Rookie Award (2021).

In 2023, linebacker Ben Hladik became the first Lion and fourth in CFL history to surpass 100 defensive tackles in a season. Brown’s CFL coaching career began with the Edmonton Elks (2018-19) where he coached J.C. Sherritt, who made 100 tackles in his final season as a player in 2018.

Brown’s coaching career began at Fresno State as a defensive quality control and linebackers coach. As a player, Brown played two seasons for the Ottawa Redblacks making 60 tackles, 10 tackles on special teams, three sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in 21 games.

Josh Donnelly joins Saskatchewan after spending two seasons with the University of Regina Rams. He began his coaching career in 2023 as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2024. He helped the Rams win the Hardy Cup over the Saskatchewan Huskies 19-14. Regina’s season ended with a 17-14 loss to Laval in the Mitchell Bowl.

Donnelly played four seasons at the University of Regina (2018-21) completing 189 of 324 passes (58%) for 2,945 yards, 20 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and 37 carries for 211 yards in 11 games for the Rams. He was forced to retire from football in 2022 due to an injury.
