B.C. Lions and DB Patrice Rene agree to a two-year contract extension

The B.C. Lions and defensive back Patrice Rene agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2026 season on Saturday. Rene was scheduled to be a free agent in February.

Patrice Rene is six foot one and weighs 205 pounds. The 27-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario, made 36 tackles, 14 tackles on special teams, and one sack in 17 games for the B.C. Lions in 2024.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers drafted Rene in the third round (21st pick) of the 2021 CFL Draft. In 2022, he played one regular season game against the Calgary Stampeders in Week 12 but was injured on a kickoff and missed the rest of the season.

The Blue Bombers released him on December 2, 2022. The B.C. Lions signed Rene on May 5, 2023. In 2023, he made 12 tackles on special teams in 16 games.

Collegiately, Rene played five seasons at North Carolina (2016-20) making 103 tackles (74 solos, 29 assists), four tackles for loss, two interceptions for two yards, 14 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 45 games for the Tar Heels. Then, Rene transferred to Rutgers in 2021 making eight tackles (6 solos, 2 assists) in five games for the Scarlet Knights.
