The Sacramento State Hornets are set to hire former Edmonton Elks General Manager Geroy Simon as the new General Manager on Monday according to The Athletic College Football writer Bruce Feldman.
Geroy Simon is 49 years old and is from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Simon spent three years as the Edmonton Elks assistant general manager and interim general manager after the team fired Chris Jones. The Elks went 7-6 with Simon at the helm. Simon was replaced by Ed Hervey as the new General Manager, and Simon was a finalist for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats GM job. However, that job went to Ted Goveia.
Simon spent a decade in the CFL personnel departments. He started as an arena scout for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2014. Next, he spent seven seasons with the B.C. Lions as a player business development advisor, director of CIS scouting and personal assistant, director of Canadian scouting and CFL Draft coordinator, director of global scouting, and U.S. regional scout. He left B.C. for Edmonton after the 2021 season to take the assistant general manager job.
As a player, Simon played 15 seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, B.C. Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders making 1,029 catches for 16,337 yards, 103 touchdowns, 23 carries for 194 yards, one touchdown, completing 3 of 5 passes (60%) for 137 yards, two touchdowns, 92 punt returns for 696 yards, 48 kick returns for 936 yards, and 11 missed field goal returns for 216 yards in 238 games.
Simon won three Grey Cups in his career (2006, 2011, 2013), and won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award in 2006. He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 2017.
Sacramento State finished 3-9 in the regular season. The Hornets are a member of the Big Sky Conference at the FCS level. They averaged 29.25 points per game, 142.6 rushing yards per game, 263.08 passing yards per game, 405.7 total yards per game, and 42 touchdowns.
Sacramento State recently hired UNLV offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brennan Marion as the new head coach after Andy Thompson resigned following the 2024 season.
Among the alumni who have played at Sacramento State include College Football Hall of Famer Ken O’Brien, CFL Hall of Famers Ricky Ray and Charles Roberts, and current CFL players Darnell Sankey and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
