The B.C. Lions re-signed kicker Sean Whyte to a one-year contract extension through the 2025 season on Tuesday. Whyte was scheduled to be a free agent next month.
Sean Whyte is five foot eight and weighs 175 pounds. The 39-year-old from White Rock, British Columbia, made 50 of 53 field goals (94.3%) with a long of 52 yards, made 36 of 38 extra points, and one kickoff for 17 yards, in 18 games in 2024.
He set a new club record of 47 consecutive field goals in a row passing Paul McCallum. In addition, he sits eleventh on the CFL’s all-time scoring list. He was named to the All-CFL Team and a CFL West All-Star.
The B.C. Lions signed Whyte on May 27, 2007, and spent a couple of years on the practice squad. In 2009, Whyte made his CFL debut after Paul McCallum was injured. He played two seasons with the Lions making 27 of 35 field goals (77.1%), made 30 extra points, and 66 kickoffs for 3,942 yards, and punted the ball 86 times for 3,548 yards (41.3 AVG) in 13 games. In 2011, the Lions traded Whyte to the Montreal Alouettes.
Whyte played four seasons in Montreal, making 160 of 190 field goals (84.2%), 173 extra points, 342 kickoffs for 19,802 yards, and punted the ball 508 times for 21, 869 yards (43.0 AVG) in 72 games. Whyte was named CFL All-Star in 2013.
In 2015, Whyte signed with the Edmonton Eskimos (now Elks). He played six seasons in Edmonton making 195 of 205 field goals (95.1%), made 166 extra points, 78 kickoffs for 4,286 yards, and punted the ball 123 times for 5,066 yards (41.2 AVG) in 83 games. Whyte helped the Eskimos win the 2015 Grey Cup championship over the Ottawa Redblacks.
The B.C. Lions signed Whyte on February 8, 2022. In three seasons, Whyte has made 136 of 145 field goals (93.8%), 128 of 132 extra points, and five kickoffs for 124 yards in 54 games. Whyte is a two-time CFL All-Star, two-time CFL West All-Star, one-time CFL East All-Star, and a Grey Cup champion (2015). Collegiately, Whyte played at Santa Monica College, and he played for the Langley Rams (CJFL).
