Toronto Argonauts sign three players including WR Dontay Demus Jr.

The Toronto Argonauts signed running back Miyan Williams, wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr., and linebacker Billy Shaeffer on Wednesday.

Miyan Williams is five foot nine and weighs 226 pounds. The 23-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Collegiately, Williams played four seasons at Ohio State (2020-23) with 258 carries for 1,554 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 18 catches for 143 yards in 27 games for the Buckeyes. In 2023, he had 49 carries for 158 yards, three touchdowns, and four catches for 42 yards in six games.

He helped the Buckeyes win the 2021 Sugar Bowl, the 2022 Rose Bowl, and the Peach Bowl. He was named Third Team All-Big Ten in 2023.

Dontay Demus Jr. is six foot three and weighs 218 pounds. The 24-year-old from Washington, D.C., signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2023. He made three catches for 97 yards in three preseason games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. After the preseason, Demus Jr. was signed to the practice squad but was released on October 3, 2023.

The Philadelphia Stars signed Demus Jr. on December 6, 2023. However, the Stars were not included in the USFL and XFL merger that formed the United Football League. The Ottawa Redblacks signed Demus Jr. on January 22, 2024.

He was released on May 15, 2024. The Edmonton Elks signed Demus Jr. on September 14, 2024, and spent a month on the practice squad. The Elks released him on October 13, 2024.

Collegiately, Demus Jr. played five seasons at the University of Maryland (2018-22) with 128 catches for 2,008 yards, 14 touchdowns, 1 carry for 4 yards, and 5 kick returns for 95 yards in 47 games for the Terrapins. He is a three-time All-Big 10 Honorable Mention.

Billy Shaeffer is six foot three and weighs 232 pounds. The 25-year-old from Warrington, Pennsylvania, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Collegiately, Shaeffer played six seasons at Lafayette (2018-23) making 241 tackles (152 solos, 89 assists), 36.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, five interceptions for 108 yards, two touchdowns, 15 pass breakups, 12 forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in 48 games for the Leopards.

In 2023, he made 83 tackles (53 solos, 30 assists), 21.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, five pass breakups, and five forced fumbles in 12 games. He was named First Team All-Patriot League, Second Team All-American, Defensive MVP, and a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is given to the defensive player of the year in the FCS.
