The Toronto Argonauts signed wide receiver Calvin Turner Jr. on Friday.
Calvin Turner Jr. is five foot eleven and weighs 198 pounds. The 25-year-old from Savannah, Georgia, went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. Then, he was drafted by the San Antonio Brahmas in the second round (14th pick) in Phase 1 of the 2023 XFL Draft. He did not play in 2023.
In 2024, Turner Jr. made 3 catches for 36 yards in 5 games. In the 2024 UFL playoffs, Turner Jr. made 5 catches for 49 yards in two games helping the Brahmas appear in the UFL Championship Game against the Birmingham Stallions. The Brahmas released him on August 24, 2024.
Collegiately, Turner Jr. played three seasons playing quarterback and defensive back at Jacksonville University (2017-19) completing 68 of 149 passes (46%) for 1,171 yards, 7 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 447 carries for 2,811 yards, 32 touchdowns, two catches for 30 yards, one touchdown, 15 kick returns for 342 yards, 54 tackles (41 solo, 13 assists), half a tackle for loss, six pass breakups, and two fumble recovery 32 games for the Dolphins.
He was named First Team-All Pioneer Football League in 2019, and a two-time All-Pioneer Football League Honorable Mention. In 2018, he set a new Jacksonville University record in rushing yards per game (143.1), rushing touchdowns (17) and yards per carry (6.9) and was just 36 yards shy of the school’s all-time single-season rushing record.
Then, Turner Jr. transferred to Hawaii (2020-21) as a wide receiver making 106 catches for 1,422 yards, 10 touchdowns, 133 carries for 647 yards, 12 touchdowns, 25 kick returns for 609 yards, one touchdown, six punt returns for 46 yards, and one tackle (1 assist) in 22 games for the Rainbow Warriors. He was named a two-time First Team All-Mountain West Conference as a wide receiver.
