The Saskatchewan Roughriders named former CFL running back Andrew Harris the new running backs coach on Monday.
Andrew Harris is five foot ten and weighs 216 pounds. The 37-year-old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, joins Saskatchewan’s coaching staff after serving as the head of football operations for the Vancouver Island Raiders (CJFL).
Harris played for the Vancouver Island Raiders (CJFL) for three seasons (2006-09) winning three CJFL national championships. In addition, Harris set numerous rushing records in the British Columbia Football Conference before joining the B.C. Lions as a territorial exemption. He won the Wally Buono Award in 2009.
Harris played six seasons for the B.C. Lions (2010-15) with 825 carries for 4,259 yards, 26 touchdowns, 265 catches for 2,639 yards, and 22 touchdowns in 102 games. Harris won his first Grey Cup in 2011. He also won the 2015 Eddie James Memorial Trophy and was named a two-time CFL West All-Star and two-time CFL All-Star.
Then, Harris signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a free agent on February 9, 2016. Harris played five seasons in Winnipeg (2016-21) with 964 carries for 5,402 yards, 25 touchdowns, 311 catches for 2,584 yards, and ten touchdowns in 74 games winning two more Grey Cup championships both over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Harris was named CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian, two-time Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian, and Grey Cup Most Valuable Player. In addition, he was named to the CFL West All-Star four times, and CFL All-Star three times. Furthermore, he won the Eddie James Memorial Trophy three more times as the West Division’s rushing leader and a two-time Dr. Beattie Martin Trophy winner for outstanding Canadian in the West Division.
The Toronto Argonauts signed Harris as a free agent on February 8, 2022. In 2022, Harris had 114 carries for 490 yards, and 23 catches for 180 yards in eight games helping the Argonauts win the Grey Cup in 2022 beating Winnipeg 24-23. It was his fourth Grey Cup title of his career.
In 2023, he had 49 carries for 229 yards, two touchdowns, 10 catches for 86 yards, and one touchdown in 12 games. Harris retired after the 2023 season as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
