The Memphis Showboats are set to re-sign defensive back Nehemiah Shelton on Tuesday according to Pro Football Newsroom writer James Larsen.
Nehemiah Shelton is six foot two and weighs 185 pounds. The 25-year-old from Gardena, California, was drafted by the Memphis Showboats in the seventh round (51st pick) of the 2023 USFL Draft. In 2023, Shelton made three tackles (2 solos, 1 assist) in three games.
The Memphis Showboats released him on August 17, 2023, and he signed with the New York Jets on the same day. He played two preseason games making one tackle (1 solo) and later joined the practice squad. He was released by the Jets on October 3, 2023.
The Memphis Showboats re-signed Shelton on October 16, 2023. In 2024, Shelton made 10 tackles (5 solos, 5 assists) in seven games. The Showboats released him again on July 22, 2024, and he re-signed with the New York Jets on July 23, 2024. Shelton made three tackles (3 solos), and two pass breakups in one preseason game.
The Jets released him on August 27, 2024. The Los Angeles Chargers signed Shelton on September 9, 2024. He spent several weeks on the practice squad before the Chargers released him on October 19, 2024.
Collegiately, Shelton played one season at Long Beach Community College in 2017 making 46 tackles (35 solos, 11 assists), three tackles for loss, four interceptions for 43 yards, and seven pass breakups in 11 games for the Vikings. He was named First Team All-Central League selection after helping the Vikings win the 2017 Patriotic Bowl.
Then, Shelton transferred to San Jose State (2018-21) making 146 tackles (116 solos, 30 assists), one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, six interceptions, and 24 pass breakups in 33 games, of which 26 were starts for the Spartans.
