The Birmingham Stallions are signing quarterback Alex McGough on Thursday according to Pro Football Newsroom writer James Larsen.
Alex McGough is six foot three and weighs 214 pounds. The 29-year-old from Tampa, Florida, signed with the Green Bay Packers on July 19, 2023. In 2023, he completed 4 of 5 passes (80%) for 69 yards, and five carries for one yard in three preseason games. He spent the season on the practice squad. In 2024, McGough switched positions as a wide receiver. He spent the season on the practice squad. He became a free agent after the 2024 season ended.
The Seattle Seahawks drafted McGough in the seventh round (220th pick) in the 2018 NFL Draft. In 2018, he completed 36 of 62 passes (58.1%) for 416 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, and nine carries for 54 yards in four preseason games. He became a free agent after the 2018 season. He also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and returned to Seattle in 2020.
The Birmingham Stallions drafted McGough in the first round (6th pick) in the 2022 USFL Draft. In his first season, McGough completed 39 of 75 passes (52%) for 460 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, three carries for 33 yards, and three touchdowns in seven games, of which three were starts helping the Stallions beat the Philadelphia Stars for their first USFL Championship.
In 2023, McGough completed 180 of 267 passes (67.4%) for 2,104 yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions, 70 carries for 403 yards, and five touchdowns in ten games leading the Stallions to its second USFL Championship over the Pittsburgh Maulers. He was named to the All-USFL Team after the season and was named the USFL MVP. The Stallions released him on July 18, 2023.
Collegiately, McGough played four seasons at Florida International University (2014-17) completing 805 of 1,334 passes (60%) for 9,084 yards, 65 touchdowns, 37 interceptions, 307 carries for 518 yards, and 16 touchdowns in 45 games for the Panthers.
