The Memphis Showboats signed defensive back Obi Melifonwu on Thursday according to Fox Sports.
Obi Melifonwu is six foot four and weighs 224 pounds. The 30-year-old from London, England, was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round (56th pick) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He also had stints with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and the Philadelphia Eagles. He made 10 tackles (9 solos, 1 assist) in seven regular season games.
The Tampa Bay Bandits signed Melifonwu on May 5, 2022. In 2022, he made 18 tackles (14 solos, 4 assists), and one pass breakup in six games. He became a free agent after the 2022 season. The St. Louis Battlehawks signed Melifonwu on January 30, 2023, but released him on February 9, 2023.
Collegiately, Melifonwu played four seasons at UConn (2013-16) making 351 tackles (224 solos, 127 assists), 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions for 37 yards, 24 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 48 games for the Huskies. He was named First Team All-AAC in 2016.
