The Toronto Argonauts and offensive lineman Ryan Hunter agreed to a contract extension through the 2027 season and released wide receiver Tommy Nield on Monday.
Ryan Hunter is six foot three and weighs 315 pounds. The 29-year-old from North Bay, Ontario, re-signed with the Argonauts on February 12, 2024. In 2024, Hunter started 17 games helping Toronto beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41-24 in the 111th Grey Cup.
Toronto’s offense averaged 28.6 points per game (1st), 368.7 net offense (3rd), 121.3 rushing yards (2nd), 265.2 passing yards (6th), 49 touchdowns (3rd), and allowed 40 sacks (8th). Hunter was named CFL East All-Star and the All-CFL Team.
The Toronto Argonauts drafted Hunter in the first round (9th pick) in the 2018 CFL Draft. However, he did not sign with them and instead went to the NFL.
Hunter signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent and played three games in 2019, including Super Bowl LIV, when the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers to win its first championship since 1969.
After Kansas City, Hunter signed with the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad. The Chargers released him on August 30, 2022. He signed with the Toronto Argonauts on September 23, 2022. He played one game for Toronto in 2022 when they won the 109th Grey Cup over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
In 2023, Hunter played 18 games for the Argonauts in 2023. Toronto’s offense ranked second in offensive average points (29.3), second in offensive touchdowns (56), second in average net offense (377.8), fourth in average rushing yards (113.7), fourth in average passing yards (272.2), and first the least number of sacks allowed (19).
Collegiately, Hunter spent five seasons at Bowling Green (2013-17), playing 52 games at left tackle and right tackle. In 2017, The Falcons’ offense helped a run game that produced a pair of 700-yard running backs, including true freshman Andrew Clair, who was named Third Team All-MAC. He is a four-time Academic All-MAC and three-time MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.
Tommy Nield is six foot three and weighs 203 pounds. The 25-year-old from Guelph, Ontario, made 21 catches for 2101 yards, and one touchdown in 11 games for the Argonauts in 2024. He missed most of the 2024 season with a hand injury.
The Toronto Argonauts drafted Nield in the fourth round (30th pick) of the 2021 CFL Draft. In four seasons with Toronto, Nield made 63 catches for 776 yards, two touchdowns, one carry for no yards, and one kick return for no yards in 26 games.
Collegiately, Nield played three seasons at McMaster University (2017-19) making 102 catches for 1,618 yards, ten touchdowns, and two kick returns for seven yards in 28 games for the Marauders.
