Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign three players including WR Kenny Lawler

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed wide receiver Kenny Lawler to a two-year contract through the 2026 season, defensive lineman TyJuan Garbutt to a two-year contract through the 2026 season, and defensive back Reggie Stubblefield to a three-year contract through the 2027 season on Wednesday.

Kenny Lawler is six foot three and weighs 197 pounds. The 30-year-old from Pomona, California, made 41 catches for 662 yards, and four touchdowns in 10 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2024. He missed most of the season with a fractured arm. 

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Lawler in the seventh round (243rd pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft. He made 11 catches for 128 yards, and two touchdowns in eight preseason games. The Seahawks released him on September 17, 2018. Next, Lawler signed with the B.C. Lions on May 9, 2018, but was released on June 9, 2018.

Then, Lawler signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on September 17, 2018, and spent the season on the practice squad. He played two seasons in Winnipeg making 107 catches for 1,651 yards, ten touchdowns, and one carry for eight yards in 29 games. Lawler helped the Blue Bombers win two Grey Cup titles in 2019 and 2021. He is a two-time CFL West All-Star (2021-22) and a CFL All-Star (2021).

 The Edmonton Elks signed Lawler on February 8, 2022. He made 58 catches for 894 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. Lawler signed a two-year deal with the Blue Bombers on February 15, 2023. In 2023, Lawler made 50 catches for 901 yards, and six touchdowns in 12 games for the Blue Bombers.

Collegiately, Lawler played three seasons at California (2013-15) making 143 catches for 1,706 yards, 27 touchdowns, one carry for five yards, and three tackles (2 solos, 1 assist) in 36 games for the Bears.

TyJuan Garbutt is six foot two and weighs 255 pounds. The 25-year-old from Fredericksburg, Virginia, made 19 tackles, three sacks, one touchdown, and one forced fumble in 12 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2024. He missed most of the season with an ankle injury. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Garbutt on July 29, 2023. In 2023, he made one tackle in one game.

Collegiately, Garbutt played five seasons at Virginia Tech (2017-22) making 121 tackles (63 solos, 58 assists), 29 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two pass breakups in 49 games, of which 36 were starts for the Hokies.

Reggie Stubblefield is six foot and weighs 195 pounds. The 26-year-old from Arlington, Texas, made four tackles, and one tackle on special teams in one game before a Torn ACL ended his 2024 season.

The D.C. Defenders drafted Stubblefield in the second round (10th pick) in the 2022 XFL Draft. The Defenders released him on February 9, 2023.

The Montreal Alouettes signed Stubblefield on March 1, 2023. He played one preseason game for Montreal making four tackles against the Ottawa Redblacks. The Alouettes released him on June 4, 2023, and later re-signed him on June 26, 2023.

In 2023, he made 38 tackles, three tackles on special teams, three sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 13 games helping the Alouettes beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 110th Grey Cup. In the Grey Cup, Stubblefield made five tackles, and one sack.

Collegiately, Stubblefield played four seasons at Prairie View A&M (2017-20) making 117 tackles (67 solos, 50 assists), 11 tackles for loss, three interceptions for 26 yards, 19 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two blocked kicks, and two punt returns for 13 yards in 20 games for the Panthers.

Then, he transferred to Kansas State in 2021 making 34 tackles (27 solos, 7 assists), seven tackles for loss, one sack, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery in 12 games for the Wildcats. He was an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 by the Coaches in 2021.
