The Calgary Stampeders moved offensive lineman Eric Smith to the retired list on Thursday according to the CFL Transactions page.

Eric Smith is six foot four and weighs 321 pounds. The 29-year-old from Decatur, Georgia, signed with the Calgary Stampeders on April 12, 2024. In 2024, he played five games. Calgary’s offense averaged 21.5 points per game, 354.1 net offense per game, 108.6 rushing yards per game, 260.1 passing yards per game, 40 touchdowns, and allowed 30 sacks in 2024.

The Miami Dolphins signed Smith as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2017. He also had stints with the New England Patriots, New York Jets, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans playing four career NFL games, two of them with the Giants.

Collegiately, Smith played four seasons at the University of Virginia (2013-16) playing right tackle in 32 games for the Cavaliers. In 2013, Smith became only the fourth true freshman to start at a tackle position in UVA program history.

In 2016, Virginia’s offense helped running back Taquan Mizzell become the first player in ACC history with 1,500 career rushing yards and 1,500 career receiving yards and helped Kurt Benkert break UVA’s passing record for a game and become the quickest UVA QB to throw for 2,000 yards in a season.

Virginia averaged 22.5 points per game, 113.6 rushing yards per game, 239.3 passing yards per game, 352.9 total yards per game, 36 touchdowns, and allowed 36 sacks finishing 2-10 for the season.
