Edmonton Elks sign defensive back Roterius ‘Ro’ Torrence and Kicker Toshiki Sato

The Edmonton Elks signed defensive back Roterius ‘Ro’ Torrence and kicker Toshiki Sato on Thursday according to the CFL Transactions page.

Roterius ‘Ro’ Torrence is six foot three and weighs 204 pounds. The 23-year-old from Bessemer, Alabama, signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2024. Seattle released him on June 25, 2024. Next, the Chicago Bears signed Torrence on August 2, 2024. In 2024, he made five tackles (2 solos, 3 assists), and two pass breakups in three preseason games. The Bears released him on September 25, 2024.

Collegiately, Torrence played two seasons at Hutchinson Community College (2019-20) making 28 tackles (21 solos, 7 assists), three tackles for loss, one interception, and six pass breakups in 11 games for the Blue Dragons. He was named First Team JUCO All-American, First Team All-KJCCC, NJCAA, and KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2020-21.

Next, he transferred to Auburn in 2021 making five tackles (5 solos) in 11 games for the Tigers. Then, he transferred to Arizona State (2022-23) making 73 tackles (47 solos, 26 assists), two tackles for loss, two interceptions, and 13 pass breakups in 21 games for the Sun Devils. In 2023, he made 37 tackles (23 solos, 14 assists), two tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and four pass breakups in 12 games.

Toshiki Sato is five foot ten and weighs 191 pounds. The 31-year-old from Yokohama, Japan, re-signed with the Stampeders on June 2, 2024, and spent the season on the practice squad. The Stampeders released him on October 27, 2024.

Sato played four seasons for the IBM Big Blue (X-League) where he set the X-League record with a 58-yard field goal. He was named a two-time best kicker in Japan making 29 field goals in 18 games. In addition, he was a two-time Most Impressive Player (2017-18).

In 2019, Sato played two games for the Generals (TSL) making four field goals with a long of 54 yards. In 2020, he played for the Aviators of The Spring League. Then, Sato was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in the second round (16th pick) in the 2021 CFL Global Draft.

He played one regular season game against the Edmonton Elks punting the ball nine times for the 311 yards (34.6 AVG) with a long of 60 yards. The Calgary Stampeders signed Sato on June 3, 2023. He spent the season on the practice squad. Collegiately, Sato attended Waseda University.
