Lehigh Valley squanders a two-run lead to lose in Gwinnett

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (12-5) continued their six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers (8-0) on Wednesday night from Coolray Field. Seth Johnson (2-0, 1.88 ERA) was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Chasen Shreve (1-1, 5.59 ERA) of Gwinnett.

Lehigh Valley were trailing 2-0 at the top of the second inning when center fielder Cal Stevenson hit an RBI double to right field scoring Óscar Mercado that cut Gwinnett’s lead down to 2-1. It was Stevenson’s fifth RBI of the season.

Lehigh Valley catcher Josh Breaux flies out to center fielder Eddy Alvarez, who made a throwing error allowing Stevenson to score to tie the game 2-2.

At the top of the third inning, a groundout by Óscar Mercado and a fielding error gave Lehigh Valley a 4-2 lead. That was all the runs Lehigh Valley scored as Gwinnett scored six unanswered runs to defeat the IronPigs by the final score of 8-4.

Lehigh Valley center fielder Cal Stevenson finished the night going 1 for 4 with a double and one RBI, while right fielder Óscar Mercado went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Lehigh Valley starter Seth Johnson had a rough night pitching four innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, six earned runs, four walks, and five strikeouts throwing 84 pitches, of which 51 were strikes for his second loss of the season.

The win went to Gwinnett relief pitcher and former IronPig Dylan Covey. Gwinnett second baseman José Devers went 1 for 3 with three RBIs.
