Lehigh Valley edges Columbus for third straight win

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (16-7) and the Columbus Clippers (12-9) played game two on Wednesday night from Coca-Cola Park. Mick Abel (1-2, 3.80 ERA) was on the mound against Ryan Webb (1-1, 3.78 ERA) of Columbus.

At the top of the second inning, Lehigh Valley starter Mick Abel was called for a balk scoring Micah Pries for a 1-0 Columbus lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Lehigh Valley third Buddy Kennedy grounded out scoring Rafael Lantigua, and the game was tied 1-1. Kennedy finished the night 0-3 with a walk and one RBI.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lehigh Valley first baseman Otto Kemp hit an RBI single to right field scoring Cade Fergus to take a 2-1 lead. Kemp finished the night 1 for 4 with a single and one RBI. That was all the runs Lehigh Valley needed to defeat the Columbus Clippers by the final score of 2-1. It was Lehigh Valley’s third consecutive win.

Lehigh Valley center fielder Justin Crawford went 2 for 4 with a single and a double. Lehigh Valley designated hitter Cade Fergus made his Lehigh Valley debut going 2 for 3 with two singles.

Lehigh Valley starter Mick Abel earned his second win of the season pitching seven innings, allowing four hits, one run, two walks, and four strikeouts throwing 82 pitches, of which 52 were strikes. Lehigh Valley relief pitcher Max Lazar earned his third save of the season pitching one inning with one strikeout throwing 20 pitches, of which 13 were strikes. The loss went to Columbus relief pitcher Cody Bolton.
